At just 24 years of age, Lando Norris is rewriting the history of McLaren. Not only has he become the youngest driver to score six podium finishes for the team, he is also one of the most charismatic and influential rising figures in the Formula 1 paddock.

What we know about him
It’s this young British Formula 1 driver, currently driving for the McLaren team, that we’re going to focus on today.
Since making his F1 debut in 2019, he has quickly established himself as one of the most promising talents on the circuit.
In the current season, Norris is firmly positioned in the top pack, continuing to rack up points, podiums and even wins, all of which reinforce his status as a potential future champion. The manufacturers’ battle is in part tough this year, thanks to his exploits in the orange category.
His beginnings in motorsports
In terms of his early life, the young man was born on 13 November 1999 in Bristol, UK. From an early age, he showed an exceptional interest and talent for motorsport, making his debut in karting at just seven years of age.
It was in this discipline that Lando Norris won his first titles.
In 2013, he became European champion and soon after making his single-seater debut in Formula Ginetta Junior, he distinguished himself on the circuits, winning several prestigious titles, including the CIK-FIA Karting World Championship in 2014.
Fascinatingly, his success came in the same year as his single-seater debut.
Between 2015 and 2017, the Briton won five titles: the British Formula 4 Championship in 2015, the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, the Formula Renault 2.0 Northem European Cup and the Toyota Racing Series in 2016 and the European Formula 3 Championship in 2017.
In 2016, Lando Norris took part in a number of championships simultaneously. The highlight was his entry into European Formula 3, where he contested three races.
The following year, he devoted himself fully to Formula 3 Europe, signing for the Carlin Motorsport team. The McLaren group kept a close eye on his performance and signed him up to its young driver programme. The Briton made rapid progress and won the European Formula 3 championship in 2017.
Before the end of the season, he contested one round of Formula 2 with Campos Racing. The team was pleased with his first experience, which confirmed his potential for Formula 1, and signed him up for the 2018 season at the same level. At the same time, he moved up the ranks at McLaren Racing, becoming a reserve driver.
Since his 18th birthday, Norris has not won a single Championship title, but came very close to the Formula 2 title in 2018, finishing just behind his compatriot George Russell.
An exciting career
His performances in Formula 1 were remarkable, and he quickly became the team’s main driver in 2019. It was at this point that McLaren offered him a contract, which was extended in 2021 for a long period, until 2025. At just 19 years of age, he becomes one of the youngest drivers ever to race in the premier class of motorsport.
His first race took place on 17 March 2019 at the Australian Grand Prix, on the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. From that first race, he impressed by qualifying eighth, a notable result for a rookie in a rebuilding team.
Throughout the season, Norris showed great consistency and promising talent, with several solid performances. His best result came at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he finished sixth, demonstrating his ability to compete with the more experienced drivers. Despite a number of retirements due to mechanical problems, Norris finished his debut season in 11th place in the drivers’ championship, with a total of 49 points.
His 2019 season was marked by his maturity behind the wheel, his speed in qualifying, and his ability to handle pressure, which earned him the admiration of fans and paddock experts alike. It was a promising start that heralded a bright future in Formula 1.
To date, Lando Norris has scored points in every season in which he has taken part. In 2021, he even finished 6th in the drivers’ standings.
He has taken five podiums in F1 and even two victories in the 2024 season.
It was on 5 May 2024, at the 110th Grand Prix in which he took part, in Miami, that Norris joyfully won his first Formula 1 race. His victory was deemed ‘easy’ by critics because of a Safety Car that placed him ahead of Max Verstappen, who was following him closely, giving the Briton a handsome lead.
However, he repeated the feat on August 25, 2024, last week, at the Dutch Grand Prix. His victory was more than deserved, with a lead of 22.896 seconds over the Dutchman.
McLaren, his team
It’s no longer a surprise that Lando Norris is racing for McLaren. Founded in 1963 by Bruce McLaren, McLaren is one of the most iconic and successful teams in Formula 1. Since its inception in 1966, the British team has won 8 constructors‘ titles and 12 drivers’ titles.
It has seen legends such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda and Lewis Hamilton drive under its colours. These drivers helped forge the team’s identity, known for its competitiveness and innovative spirit.

Between the 1980s and 1990s, McLaren dominated F1, notably with the legendary duo of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, whose rivalry marked the history of the sport. Senna won three world titles (1988, 1990, 1991) with McLaren, while Prost won a championship in 1989 after a particularly tense season between the two team-mates.
In 2008, Lewis Hamilton, having joined McLaren in 2007, won his first world title, becoming the youngest world champion at the time.
However, a team is not a team if it does not experience crises. So it was after years of difficulties in the 2010s, due in part to unsuccessful engine partnerships, that McLaren began its resurgence towards the end of the decade. In particular, the arrival of Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz in 2019 marked the start of a new era for the team.
The highlights of his career
Let’s take a look back at Lando Norris’s career and look at some of his most memorable moments, both good and bad.
During the Austrian Grand Prix in 2020, Norris claimed his first F1 podium with a third-place finish for McLaren, becoming the youngest British driver to stand on an F1 podium at 20 years old. This performance confirmed his potential and his ability to shine under pressure.
But in 2021, at the Russian Grand Prix, the driver experienced one of the most dramatic moments of his young career. Leading the race with just a few laps to go, a sudden downpour turned the strategy on its head. Having opted to stay on slicks, he lost out on victory due to the wet conditions, finishing seventh. This incident was a crucial learning moment for him.
Daniel Ricciardo’s arrival at McLaren that same year brought a new dynamic to the team. Their collaboration was marked by moments of humour, but also by intense internal competition. The 2021 Italian Grand Prix saw Ricciardo win the race, with Norris in second place, signing McLaren’s first one-two since 2010.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2023, Lando finished second, achieving a crucial podium for McLaren in a season where the team has shown signs of resurgence. The podium also marked an important milestone in Norris’ continued progression as a leading F1 driver.
A driving style all of it’s own
Lando Norris is a driver renowned for his calculating yet aggressive driving style. On the track, he displays remarkable strategic intelligence, knowing when to attack and when to be more cautious. This measured aggressiveness enables him to seize opportunities without compromising his race, an essential balance in Formula 1.
He excels in qualifying, where his speed often enables him to position himself favourably on the grid. His mastery of tyres and his ability to adapt to changing conditions, particularly in wet weather, make him a formidable driver in difficult situations. He has demonstrated his skills on several occasions in the rain, where his delicate touch and driving instinct are particularly evident.

However, Norris still has some areas to improve. Although he is consistent and regular in his performances, he can sometimes find it difficult to maintain an optimum pace over long distances, especially when tyre management becomes critical.
In addition, due to his relative youth, he still lacks experience in certain complex scenarios, particularly in high-pressure races where victory is at stake. This was evident at the aforementioned 2021 Russian Grand Prix, where a late decision in the rain cost Norris his first F1 win.
He is therefore a complete driver with immense potential, which makes him deserving of his place among the best drivers in the world today.
Brilliant even off the track
As for his personality off the track, the Briton has an engaging personality. He is renowned for his ability to establish positive relationships with his team-mates, and one of his most striking friendships was with Carlos Sainz, nicknamed ‘Carlando’ by the fans. Their complicity, fuelled by jokes and mutual respect, helped to create a motivating and healthy atmosphere within the McLaren team.
Their camaraderie captivated the fans and showed that competitiveness on the track can go hand in hand with true friendship, which is hard to come by in this environment.
Outside of Formula 1, Norris has several passions, including video games, which he actively shares with his fans on streaming platforms such as Twitch. He is an avid gamer, taking part in charity events and online competitions, reaching out to a younger audience and building his popularity outside traditional motorsport circles.
In 2021, he also launched his own clothing and lifestyle brand, ‘Quadrant,’ which reflects his passions for video games, e-sports and racing.
Norris’ public image is that of an approachable and friendly driver. His jovial personality and sense of humour have helped him build a devoted fan base. Active on social networks, he shares moments from his professional and personal life, offering a glimpse into his daily routine. This transparency and his authentic approach make him particularly relatable in the eyes of the public.
With the media, Lando is known for his frankness and relaxed approach. He always shows his human side and doesn’t hesitate to interact with his fans, whether at autograph sessions or through his posts on social networks. He is therefore a well-liked and respected figure in the world of Formula 1.
Now and beyond
Norris continues to shine in the 2024 season, putting in solid performances that reinforce his reputation as an elite driver. With several podiums and two victories to his name, he has demonstrated his ability to compete regularly for top positions.
His talent in qualifying has often seen him finish in the top 5, and although he has encountered some difficulties, notably due to the increasing competitiveness of the field and occasional mechanical problems, he has been able to maintain a high level of consistency throughout the season.
He has a very positive relationship with his team-mate, Oscar Piastri, in line with his behaviour towards his former team-mate, Carlos Sainz.
Their dynamic is marked by mutual respect and a willingness to work together to improve the team’s performance.
Unlike some tense rivalries in the paddock, such as the one between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, Lando and Oscar prefer to work together. They share a similar approach to car development, creating a healthy and motivating atmosphere within McLaren.

As for the future, the driver has a guaranteed place at McLaren for the 2025 season, as his contract is in force. He is seen as a key pillar of the team as it continues to rebuild and fight for podium positions. Although he has attracted the attention of some other teams, his desire to stay with McLaren and contribute to its success is strong.
There are no signs that he is in danger of losing his place or retiring in the near future. On the contrary, Lando is seen as a potential leader for McLaren because of his experience and consistent performance.
As he continues to shine on the Formula 1 scene, the next few races may well reveal whether the young prodigy will be able to turn his potential into a succession of spectacular triumphs, keeping the paddock on its toes.
