Mercedes Junior Kimi Antonelli had an eventful first FP1 session in Monza, which was cut short after a crash at the final turn. Despite the setback, Antonelli remained positive, expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

Kimi Antonelli has been the talk of the Formula 1 paddock in recent months. Many reports have suggested he’s the next rookie to sign on for 2025. These reports were justified by Mercedes having their rookie driver compete in FP1 this weekend. However, this session did not live up to the expectations of Antonelli and many F1 Fans.
On his opening flying lap, the Italian was able to produce 1:23.95, being the fastest car on track. However, while navigating the iconic Parabolica, Antonelli lost control of his W15, suffering a snap of oversteer on the apex. The young driver crashed into the barriers, bringing out the red flag and prematurely ending his session.

After the FP1 session in Monza, Antonelli reflected on his debut, acknowledging the intensity of the crash.
“Unfortunately, it ended quite quickly because of the crash. It was quite a big one, around 52 G’s.”
However, the Italian made sure to apologise to his team stating, “I’m really sorry to the team and George for making them work afterwards. It was just a mistake on my side, pushing a bit too much for the conditions.” Antonelli also thanked the team for giving him an opportunity to further his Motorsport career. With the Italian driver stating, “I’m really thankful to the team for making this possible.”

Regardless of the disappointment, the Junior driver remained optimistic, not letting this shake his confidence.
“I should have built the run a bit more progressively, but definitely a lesson learned for next time,”
“I’m not feeling super well at the moment, so I’m just gonna go and try to rest, and focus on the rest of the weekend because there are still some races to go.”
Antonelli was referring to the Formula 2 races he will be competing in for the remainder of the weekend. In which he has managed to qualify sixth, ahead of his PREMA teammate Ollie Bearman. The 18-year-old will be looking to improve on this to help bounce back from his eventful Friday.
