Designed to increase overtaking, next year’s F3 car follows in the footsteps of F2’s new 2024 regulations. Improvements in safety, sustainability, dynamics, and aerodynamics have all been made to further align the feeder series with Formula 2 and Formula 1. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem spoke on this, stating:

“By aligning closely with FIA Formula 2 and Formula 1 aerodynamics, the new F3 car offers young drivers an essential platform to develop their skills, preparing them for the challenges that lie ahead in the higher categories.”

The car will once again feature a Dallara chassis with a Mecachrome engine, but next year the gearbox will be designed by 3Mo instead of Hewland. Additionally, the new F3 car will have the Marelli Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) that is in current F2 car. It will also run Aramco’s 100% sustainable fuel according to FIA standards. The series will be the first to do so, with F2 following suit next season.

A big change for the F3 2025 car is the new size of Pirelli tyre. Next year, each car will run 16-inch tyres. These new tyres will be closer in size to the F2 and F1 tyres, which are both 18 inches.

Formula 3 has been in discussion with Pirelli about transitioning to 16-inch tyres for a while. FIA Formula 3 Championship CEO Bruno Michel said this when asked about the new tyres:

“We believe 18-inch would have been too big a dimension for Formula 3 or the weight and size of those cars. But it was time to move it towards the direction of the rest of the family.”

“So I think it’s very sensible to step in the right direction.”

Striving for Inclusivity

The new cockpit will fit a wider range of drivers than the current one, promoting inclusivity. They also adjusted the steering to make certain all drivers will be able to drive the car without sacrificing the setup.

F1 Academy driver Chloe Chambers took part in testing for the F2 2025 car to help with this. She tested different setups to ensure drivers of different strengths could easily operate the car. The same tests were also done with the F2 car. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem mentioned the importance of these improvements, stating:

“Moreover, the enhanced cockpit design reflects our ongoing efforts to make motorsport more inclusive, ensuring that drivers of all physical profiles have the opportunity to compete at the highest level.”

“This new FIA Formula 3 embodies the FIA’s vision of a sport that is progressive, inclusive, and sustainable.”
