Lewis Hamilton’s Passion for Africa
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, believes it’s time for Africa to have a Grand Prix. Hamilton, fresh from a summer break in Africa, argues that F1 can’t keep expanding elsewhere and ignore Africa.
“One hundred percent! We can’t be adding races in other locations and continue to ignore Africa, which the rest of the world just takes from.”

A Potential Race in Rwanda
Hamilton’s call for a race in Africa might soon become a reality. Formula 1 has scheduled discussions with Rwandan representatives this September. This meeting aims to explore the possibility of hosting a Grand Prix in Rwanda.
“They have presented a good plan and actually we have a meeting with them at the end of September. It will be on a permanent track.”
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirms these talks
The Case for an African Grand Prix
Africa hasn’t hosted a Formula 1 race since 1993 in South Africa. Hamilton thinks that bringing F1 back to the continent would benefit the region.
“No one gives anything to Africa, I think having a grand prix there, it would really be able to highlight just how great the place is and bring in tourism and all sorts of things”
Hamilton emphasised the potential of showcasing Africa’s beauty and attracting tourism through a Grand Prix. According to Lewis, there’s no reason to delay:
“In the short term, we should just get on that track and have that part of the calendar and then work on building out something moving forward.”
Hamilton’s Deep Connection to Africa
Hamilton’s passion for Africa isn’t just about racing. He recently travelled across the continent, immersing himself in the culture and history. He visited a refugee camp in Senegal and learned about the daily struggles people face.
“It’s one thing reading about it or hearing on the news, but actually seeing and speaking to kids who are walking 10 kilometres to get to school… Not having school meals ever, not even being able to eat during the day.”
Moving Forward with Purpose
Hamilton’s experiences in Africa have strengthened his resolve to make a difference. He wants to find ways to support and help communities there. “It’s like, ‘Hey, what can I do to get on board? How can I help?’ And so that’s now what I’m trying to figure out,” he said.
The Future of F1 in Africa
Hamilton’s advocacy for an African Grand Prix comes at a time when F1 is actively exploring new locations. With a potential race in Rwanda on the horizon, Hamilton’s vision of an F1 race in Africa might soon come true. As he continues to raise awareness and push for change, the world of Formula 1 watches closely, ready to make history on African soil.
