Russell’s successes in GP3 and Formula 2
In 2017, George Russell began his F1 career as a test driver for Mercedes. That same year, he joined the ART Grand Prix team in the GP3 Series. He quickly made a name for himself by winning his first race at Spielberg, followed by a victory at Silverstone. However, he ran into problems in Budapest. He didn’t take part in the first race and finished outside the points in the second.
Despite this, Russell tested the Mercedes AMG F1 W08 during private trials. He thus familiarised himself with the world of F1. When the championship resumed at Spa, he took pole position, a win, second place and two fastest race laps. He also won at Monza and was crowned GP3 Series champion at Jerez, in the penultimate round of the season. At the end of the year, he became a test driver for Force India. He took part in his first Grand Prix weekend in Brazil and then in Abu Dhabi.
In 2018, Russell continued his career with ART Grand Prix in Formula 2. He was reunited with team-mate Jack Aitken. He started the season slowly, but shone with victories in Baku and Barcelona. After a difficult weekend in Monaco, he bounced back with two pole positions and two wins at Le Castellet and the Red Bull Ring.
Before the summer break, Russell distinguished himself during private testing at the Hungaroring with Mercedes. He broke the track record with a time of 1’15″575. Move to Formula 1
On 12 October 2018, George Russell was given a start by Williams F1 Team for the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship, thanks to his links with Mercedes. It was a difficult season for him, at the wheel of the least competitive single-seater. His only rival was team-mate Robert Kubica, whom he easily dominated. Despite this, he set his first fastest lap of the race and scored his first F1 points.
Back with Williams at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Russell finished the season with three points. He finished 18th in the championship. In 2020, he continued with Williams, but the season got off to a bad start with a retirement at the Austrian Grand Prix due to a fuel pressure problem. He qualified twelfth at the Styrian Grand Prix, the best performance by a Williams since 2018. Russell showed his potential, but the season was marked by ups and downs, with retirements at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and other challenges.
His first podium
In his new season with Williams, George Russell reached the second qualifying stage in the first race in Bahrain. In the following race at Imola, he battled for ninth place. Unfortunately, he lost control of his car when he tried to overtake Valtteri Bottas, resulting in a double retirement.
Russell regularly qualified in Q2. At the Styrian Grand Prix, he benefited from a penalty from Yuki Tsunoda and started tenth. However, he retired in eighth place. The following week, at the Austrian Grand Prix, he took advantage of a penalty imposed on Sebastian Vettel, qualifying eighth. He eventually finished eleventh, losing the point for tenth place to Fernando Alonso.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, he managed to pick up four points by finishing eighth, just behind team-mate Nicholas Latifi. George Russell qualified second at the Belgian Grand Prix, giving Williams its first front row start since 2017. It was Williams’ best qualifying result since 2014.

At this race, he took his first podium finish and gave Williams its first podium since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017.
On 7 September 2021, Mercedes made official the arrival of George Russell from 2022, where he will team up with Lewis Hamilton. At just 23, he will become the youngest driver in the team, forming an all-British duo with Hamilton.
A difficult season in 2022 and 2023
In 2022, the Mercedes W13, driven by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, struggled to compete. The Red Bull RB18 and Ferrari F1-75 dominated the first nine races. Victories were shared between Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez.

2024 with power
