FP2 | F1 2024 | Dutch GP: Mercedes and McLaren Split the Top 4

FP2 for the 2024 Dutch GP started with more stable weather conditions than the previous F1 session earlier in the day, allowing teams to gather valuable data for the remainder of the weekend.

All cars headed out onto the the track to gather valuable data as the weather seems to be very mixed throughout the weekend.

Early Drama

The early running of the FP2 session for the Dutch GP threw up some early drama as both George Russell and Max Verstappen had moments, George locked up and had to take to the gravel and escape road to continue the session, Max had a hairy moment when his Redbull reacted poorly to the bumpy track, leading the Dutchman to come on to the radio stating that the car is “boxing”.

Red Flag

The first Red Flag of the Dutch GP was brought out when Nico Hülkenberg’s HAAS’s rear wheels locked under breaking at the end of the straight, the car was pitched across the gravel and into the wall ending the session for the German.

Gearbox issues has ended Carlos Sainz FP2 at the Dutch GP

Another casualty of the weekend was Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari, who’s session was ended after the car developed gearbox issues. In a weekend where the weather could play a part any loss of running could have devastating effects on the whole weekend.

No Drama Just Driving

As the drama subsided the session returned to it’s regular scheduled programming, several drivers posted times, including George Russell who put his Mercedes into first with a time of 1:10.702, around ten seconds faster than the lap time during the wet FP1 session.

Oscar Piastri put his McLaren into second place with a respectable time that was only a tenth behind Russell. Oscar did have some early drama as he had an issue with his helmet that was effecting his vision.

Further down the order, the Williams duo were sitting 10th and 15th for Albon and Sargeant respectively. The team has brought several upgrades, which they will be hoping to push the cars further into the midfield.

Into the final 10 minutes, the field were pretty settled pace wise, majority of the field were completing their long run programmes, gathering data for the Dutch GP on Sunday. Charles Leclerc dived down the inside of Sergio Perez locking the Ferrari’s front tyre, who said it was a practice session?

The chequered flag fell to signal the end of the and the cars on track competed their practice starts, the session finishes with Russell taking the top spot and McLarens’s Piastri in second.
