INDYCAR | 2025 Detroit Grand Prix Preview | Taking the Battle to Palou

As the NTT INDYCAR Series moves on from a historic Indy 500 and heads to the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix, Alex Palou’s dominance is undeniable. However, the challenging street circuit could provide an opportunity for his rivals to stop his rampage. Here are a few of the top contenders to look for this weekend.

Arrow McLaren: O’Ward, No. 1 Contender?

Arrow McLaren enters Detroit with a dynamic trio and plenty of momentum. Pato O’Ward leads the charge, sitting second in the standings after a strong third-place finish at Indy. “We’re building a great campaign for the championship, and at this point that’s where we’ll focus,” he said after the race.

Rookie Nolan Siegel continues to impress, finishing 13th in his Indy 500 debut. “We made progress… I think we’re in a good spot for race day,” he said after finishing Carb Day.

Rounding out the line-up is Christian Lundgaard. Despite a tough Indy qualifying, he found it when it mattered, climbing to seventh on race day. “We were closer to what the No. 5 and 17 cars were running… that just turned our day completely around.”

Team Penske: Pushing Through

Team Penske faces internal challenges following the dismissal of several key executives after qualifying violations at the Indy 500. Despite this, their drivers, Power, Newgarden, and McLaughlin, are determined to set the team back on course. Power, who led early practice sessions at Indy, remains a threat on street circuits.

Newgarden, reflecting on the current state of the team, said, “We’re focused on regrouping and putting our best foot forward in Detroit. It’s about learning from the past and pushing ahead.”

McLaughlin, looking ahead after his Indy misfortune, expressed enthusiasm for his new ride: “Can’t wait to get this beauty on track in Detroit!”

What About the Ganassi Stable?

While Alex Palou has stolen the headlines, don’t overlook the “Iceman.” Scott Dixon has quietly climbed to sixth in the standings, flying under the radar. A six-time series champion and a past winner on Detroit’s streets, he definitely knows how to manage street races when it counts.

His Indy 500 might not have been a rousing success, but Dixon stayed positive. “It was a tough race with how the cautions played out, but we stuck to our plan and made the best of it,” he said afterward. “We’ve got a fast car, and I think we can challenge up front in Detroit.”

If anyone in the series can pressure the runaway points leader without blinking, it might just be his own teammate.

A Downtown Detroit Challenge

Who can upset Palou’s run of form and maybe even close the gap to his top spot in the standings? That remains to be seen. The 2025 Detroit Grand Prix is the stage where these contenders will get their first shot at the reigning champ since Indy.

Detroit’s street circuit is known for its unforgiving nature, with tight corners and limited overtaking opportunities. Success here requires not only speed but also strategic acumen and resilience. As teams and drivers prepare, the stage is set for a thrilling contest that could reshape the championship narrative.
