Formula E races towards zero emissions with transport initiative

The Formula E World Championship arrives in Monaco for the seventh time this weekend.

The famous circuit is the ideal setting for the all-electric series as the cars take on the 19-turn, 3.3km track.

Pascal Wehrlein currently leads the way after a strong showing in Misano however the German has close competition from Jake Dennis with the drivers tied on 89 points.

At the heart of Formula E is its environmental goals and it remains the only sport certified net zero carbon since inception.

This week, the focus has been on how the series is revolutionising the public transport sector throughout France.

Improving sustainability through electrification

In the Côte d’Azur, a large number of electric buses have recently been introduced. Formula E title sponsor, ABB has also supplied around 150 Terra DC monoblock chargers for overnight charging.

Additionally, they have installed 15 pantographs at the terminals, allowing for quick charging.

Fabien Laleuf, General Manager at ABB France said the company iOS “driving the transition to sustainable transportation”.

“It’s great to have such an exciting showcase of the capabilities of e-mobility on our doorstep,”

He added that they hope to “highlight technology” that is supporting this growing sector.

Transport links, like public buses, are benefitting from ABB technology

ABB’s technology is also being used in ports across France such as Marseille and Toulon.

Three Corsica Linea ferries will cut emissions and noise pollution by using electricity for power.

In Toulon, ABB has led a consortium providing shore-to-ship power connection for ferries and cruise ships.

This technology will eliminate more than 80 percent of pollutant emissions greatly benefitting the air quality in the surrounding areas.

Once again, Formula E is striving to prove that motorsport can co-exist in an eco-conscious world.

It will be interesting to see what the next technological advancement will be and how it will impact the lives of the general public.

Following the race in Monaco, the Championship returns to Berlin for two races on May 11th and 12th. The season comprises 16 races in 10 locations around the world.
