Much like yesterday’s Free Practice session in the rain, the Formula 3 Sprint Race kicking off the Saturday of the 2024 British GP at Silverstone was to take place during conditions far from ideal. However, the high-speed circuit, would offer plenty of opportunity for the drivers to overtake and maximise their potential.

Just before 9:20 BST, officials announced a delay in the Sprint start due to adverse weather conditions. The pitlane, which was originally set to open at 9:30, was pushed back to 9:45. The Aston Martin Safety Car took to the track to determine whether the race could start.

Officials postponed the Sprint Race due to unsafe conditions. It would commence at 18:10 BST.

Sprint Race 2024 British GP

With sunny skies across Silverstone, the drivers headed to the grid for the Sprint. Noel Le贸n began the formation lap from reverse grid pole.

Lindblad took the lead at Turn 1 and Zagazeta was up to second through Turn 4 on Le贸n. However, through Maggots and Becketts, Le贸n retook second place.

Lap 3 saw Dunne move up to seventh while up ahead Voisin took fourth from Mansell at Luffield. A virtual safety car was soon deployed after Ramos suffered a puncture and what was left of his tyre was near the racing line at Copse.

We went back to racing conditions on Lap 4 and Tsolov took P8 from Min矛. However, just as quickly as the grid was placed back into racing conditions, they were placed under a safety car once again as Esterson and Goethe collided at Copse. While their race was finished, both drivers were out of their cars and well.

The Safety Car ended on Lap 8 and the drivers were back underway racing up to the Hamilton straight. Lindblad retained the lead over Le贸n and Zagazeta with Voisin and Mansell completing the top five.

Browning, the Championship leader, was slow at Turn 4 and tumbled down to 25th position after big contact with Tramnitz. A lock-up sent Tramnitz into the side of Browning. This was not the Sprint Race he would have wanted to bridge the gap between him and those behind him in the title fight.

Eight Laps to Go

On the tenth lap, Le贸n was on Lindblad’s tail. He had DRS on the race leader and was attempting to make the move for P1. Elsewhere, Dunne went up the inside of Wurz at Stowe to take sixth position. On Lap 11, he then passed Mansell in the same place to take P5.

Dunne went back down to seventh, likely due to a possible penalty or grid swap. As he tried to re-pass Wurz, there was contact down the Wellington Straight. Both ventured off track and headed down the order. A virtual safety car was deployed as Dunne recovered back to the pitlane with a broken front wing. Wurz was stranded on the inside of Brooklands, his race was over.

The top ten on Lap 13 was Lindblad, Le贸n, Zagazeta, Voisin, Mansell, Tsolov, Min矛, Meguetounif, Montoya, and van Hoepen. As the VSC ended, Lindblad’s lead was up to 1.8s over Le贸n in P2.

While Lindblad continued to extend his lead, the fight for lower point places were close from P6 to P11. Montoya took a dive down the inside of Meguetounif at Turn 3 to secure P8.

Lindblad won the Sprint Race at the 2024 British GP. He now has more wins than any other driver this season. Le贸n placed second while Zagazeta earned his maiden F3 podium in third.

Voisin took his best F3 result in P4 as Mansell held off a queue behind him to seal fifth place. Tsolov followed ahead of Min矛, Montoya, Meguetounif, and van Hopen, who rounded out the Sprint Race points,

The Feature Race will commence tomorrow at 08:20 BST.
