Formula 2 driver Amaury Cordeel has been caught speeding after posting a TikTok in which he was seen going 179km/h in a 50km/h zone in his hometown of Temse.

The 20-year-old Belgian was found guilty this month, despite having had committed the offence back in December of 2020. The video posted on his TikTok account showed the excessive speed he was driving, although he later deleted the video.

The TikTok video was brought to the attention of local authorities and according to Belgium Media HLN, charges were pressed against him and he was found guilty.

Cordeel had his own views on what happened stating in court, “I couldn’t possibly have driven, because I didn’t have a driver’s licence at all at the time.”

Speculation on social media and in the Belgian press states that Cordeel bought a drivers license online for 450 euros and failed to disclose this to the court.

Cordeel’s lawyer claimed that there was no proof of Cordeel even driving the vehicle.

“There can be no link whatsoever between the video and the fact that my client was driving.

“It was his father’s car, but otherwise there is enough doubt to say that he was not driving.”

Despite all of this, Cordeel was found guilty by the court and was served a 3,600 Euro fine as well as losing his drivers licence for 6 months.

There has not been any information on what implications to his Formula 2 career this could have.

Cordeel was set to drive for the Virtuosi Racing Team in 2023 alongside Alpine junior driver Jack Doohan.

Formula 2 CEO, Bruno Michel stated:

“It’s probably something that will have to be discussed with the FIA, to see how to deal with it and whether to do anything special.

“We can’t ignore that fact, that’s for sure.

“I can’t really answer your question, but it’s something we definitely need to discuss with the FIA, to see how to handle it.”

This was not the first time the Formula 2 driver had supposedly been speeding on normal roads, after being accused of hitting similar speeds in an Audi, also posted on social media and later deleted.

We will have to wait and see what will happen to Cordeel and the implications it has to his career in Formula 2.
