Drivers had one hour of practice before taking the track once again this afternoon for FP2. All eyes were on George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and Ollie Bearman, who were all racing under the British flag in this FP1 session at the historic Silverstone circuit. Also on track for a home race was Thai-British driver Alex Albon in the Williams.

Bearman joined Isack Hadjar, Franco Colapinto, and Jack Doohan as the Rookie drivers who took part in this session.

Green Flag

The drivers were free to leave their garages at 12:30 BST. The first drivers out were George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, and Ollie Bearman, four of the five Britons taking part in FP1. Dry tyres were in use during this stage with the Hard C1 tyres largely fitted down the grid.

Stroll appeared to have some early issues and reported a brake-by-wire failure. Elsewhere, McLaren had aero rakes attached.

The first lap time of the session was completed by Bearman, the future of Haas. He was quickly replaced by Max Verstappen in P1 who then was sent into P3 by the two Mercedes drivers. Russell, thus far, had set the fastest lap time of 1:28.888. Those behind him were all on 1:29s.

Red Flag

Ten minutes in to the session saw the first red flag deployed. Yuki Tsunoda came to a halt in the gravel at Turn 7. He lost the rear of the car into the entry of the corner, which spun him into the gravel. There was no clash with the barrier and he appeared to be fine, but the car was breached.

Green Flag #2

Russell continued to be the fastest driver, setting a 1:28:046. Fellow Brit Bearman was also out on track on the Soft tyre, and leapt to P5. However, Carlos Sainz soon jumped to the top, venturing into the 1:27s.

Verstappen soon reclaimed P1. More soft tyres were seen on track but nothing was testing the Dutchman’s set time, yet.

Five minutes later, Oscar Piastri, set a lap on the Soft compound, that saw him reach the top of the standings with a 1:27.631. His teammate Norris soon ventured out on a lap on the Soft tyres but could only improve to P4, two-tenths down on Piastri.

A second lap on the set of Softs saw Norris put himself at the top of the leader board, over two-tenths of Piastri’s time with a 1:27.420. Lance Stroll soon followed with an impressive lap time of 1:27.554, which split the McLaren duo apart to make your top three with less than ten minutes to go.

Final Ten Minutes

With seven minutes left on the clock, it appeared that Piastri’s luck had ran out. He reported a hydraulic issue and crawled back to the pit lane. He made it to the pit lane entry but came to a halt on the grass and was out of the session. This was not what McLaren would have wanted after a rather dominant FP1 with their two drivers.

Charles Leclerc had a close call with Stroll through the high-speed Maggots-Becketts section. This did not stop Stroll from retaining his P2 place in FP1, however.

The Formula 1 FP1 2024 British GP FP1 session ended with Lando Norris first with a 1:27.420, Lance Stroll second with a 1:27.554, and Oscar Piastri third with a 1:27.631.

After the chequered flag was raised, there was almost a large shunt between Norris and the Red Bull rookie Hadjar through Turn 2. Norris was forced to slam on the brakes, and the incident was noted by the stewards.

FP2 will take place this afternoon from 16:00 local time.
