In an unprecedented move, the FIA have decided to reopen an investigation into Lewis Hamilton crossing the track during the Qatar Grand Prix.
This is the second time the incident has been under scrutiny, with Formula One’s governing body already having investigated and fined the British driver.

Hamilton was forced to retire from the race when he crashed into fellow Mercedes teammate George Russel as the pair fought for position moments after lights out. Russel’s car escaped any serious damage whilst Hamilton’s race was instantly over, finishing on the gravel trap. Seconds later, he then climbed out of the car and began to cross the track to return to the pits, just before the main field of cars came through. This action resulted in a breach of regulations. Hamilton was summoned to the stewards immediately after the Grand prix to be reprimanded for the incident and was subsequently fined £43,350 (half of which was suspended).
However, one week on the FIA has decided to reopen an investigation after believing the incident may have been more serious than originally thought. The investigation is as much about setting an example for the future as it is looking into Hamilton’s actions. It has been made clear by the governing body that the driver will not face further penalties, but purposely acts as a deterrent for any future breaches.
This decision to revisit the track-cross rule breach has raised questions as to why the seven-time World Champion has been singled out by the FIA. Hamilton has branded himself as a “role model” in the past, the FIA cited this as a contributing factor for the severity of the punishment, releasing the following statement:
“The FIA notes that Lewis was apologetic during the subsequent stewards’ hearing into the incident and acknowledged that the crossing was a serious safety breach. However, in view of his role model status, the FIA is concerned about the impression his actions may have created on younger drivers.”
This was a highly unusual reference to make, but perhaps reflects the extent of the influence Lewis Hamilton’s actions have over fans and his peers. Hamilton is yet to comment on the situation.
