Recent Controversies

Tensions have arisen in the past year following conflicting interests between the two parties.

The FIA opened up applications for teams wishing to enter Formula One, approving Andretti backed by General Motors.

The FOM however denied the American team the opportunity to race in Formula One as it is against their current interest of having a maximum of 10 teams on the grid.

The governing body’s president Mohamed Ben Sulayem also annoyed the commercial rights holder after claiming F1’s value of $20billion was “inflated.”

Towards the end of last year, the FIA dropped an investigation into an alleged conflict of interest involving Susie Wolff, an employee of the FOM and her husband Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

The former has taken legal action against the FIA over the claims in France.

The latest tension came after Ben Sulayem was investigated by the FIA’s ethics division over alleged interference with two race weekends, including a claim he tried to block the approval of the Las Vegas GP. He was cleared of any wrongdoing.

FIA and FOM Working Together

In a joint statement the FIA and FOM said:

“The FIA Formula 1 World Championship has never been so strong and is growing globally and the FIA and Formula 1 are committed to delivering the best outcomes for the whole sport.

To that end, both parties are developing a new strategic plan that will allow us to seize the opportunities and further enhance the potential for F1 in the years ahead.
