Italian driver Leonardo Fornaroli took victory at his home race in Monza ahead of Arvid Lindblad and Joshua Durksen after a late penalty cost Beganovic third place in the F2 Sprint Race for the 2025 Italian GP.
Lights Out in Monza
Dino Beganovic led the field down to Turn 1 in Monza, defending his lead from second place Sami Meguetounif. In the back of the field, there were some lock-ups and a driver onto the grass. Leonardo Fornaroli overtook Meguetounif for second place in the next corners.
Safety Car on Lap 3
Alpine Junior Driver Kush Maini had a high speed spin into the gravel after trying to overtake Dunne around the outside. The Safety Car was out on Lap 3 for his beached car.
The Safety Car ended on Lap 4. Beganovic led the field down to Turn 1 once again to start Lap 5, but second place Fornaroli got a great restart. He went side-by-side with Beganovic into Turn 1, but he had a lock-up that forced him to cut the corner and give the position back to Beganovic.
Fornaroli Leads in Italy
Fornaroli was all over the back of Begnovic into Ascari, even without DRS. Once he got DRS, Leo Fornaroli overtook Beganovic for the lead the sprint race on Lap 8. On the next lap, Arvid Lindblad, who had made his way to third, took second place from Beganovic.
Alex Dunne attempted to overtake Sami Meguetounif, but it ended with both drivers in the gravel. Both drivers made it out of the gravel, but the stewards investigations were piling up for Dunne halfway through the sprint. Dunne continued in the race, but Meguetounif retired.
Our pole sitter Dino Beganovic was now under pressure from Goethe, who was fighitng for his first podium. The top four drivers were in a DRS train, two second ahead of the rest of the field. Goethe’s attempt to overtake Beganovic went south as he spun and found his way into the grass. There was a brief yellow flag, but he rejoined the track.
After crashing in qualifying and starting 14th, Verschoor made steady progress throughout the race. He was putting pressure on fifth place Roman Stanek with five laps to go.
Lindblad was pressuring Fornaroli as Beganovic fell back from the top two and into the DRS of Durksen behind.
A Late Virtual Safety Car
Max Esterson’s Trident began smoking, causing him to pull over off the track. The yellow flag was out as Goethe elected to pit before they eventually called a Virtual Safety Car.
The VSC ended with just three laps left, and Verschoor instantly jumped past fifth place Stanek. Fornaroli was holding onto the lead, but Lindblad was piling on the pressure.
Linblad made a small mistake, losing the DRS with one lap to go. Dino Beganovic received a five-second penalty for a VSC infringement. Durksen, who had lost DRS after going off into the gravel, was now going to inherit the podium from the Ferrari Junior.
