Formula 2 has begun the 2026 European leg in Monte Carlo. The unforgiving streets delivered another dramatic Qualifying session, where precision and confidence proved equally indispensable throughout.
With limited overtaking chances and narrow margins, every lap carried immense significance in determining race prospects. Incidents, red flags, and wall brushes shaped the session, with a standout performance from Rafael Câmara, who will be Sunday’s Polesitter.
Group A: Redemption pole for Câmara
The green flag was waved as the odd numbered cars set out to secure their starting position on the grid. However, Camara suffered early damage from contact with the barriers in the final corner.
The streets of Monte Carlo posed to be a slippery track for the drivers as each tried their best to not make costly mistakes. Alexander Dunne, the 2025 Polesitter, went to the top with a 1:22.427.
Trident’s John Bennett had an unfortunate incident, ending his Qualifying after hitting the barriers out of Turn 1. Noel León hopped on to provisional Pole, despite solid damage to his car after hitting the wall as he entered the final sector.
The mechanics of Invicta Racing were able to doctor Câmara’s car back to health, with the Brazilian driver setting a 1:20.923 and subsequently, claiming provisional Pole. Dunne claimed second as Dino Beganovic slotted into third after a tricky weekend in Montreal.
Group B: Tsolov on top
The even-numbered cars were next to filter out of the pit-lane.
Red flags were waved once again after Laurens van Hoepen of Trident, and Kush Maini of ART GP, collided. The incident left the former stranded at the Nouvelle Chicane.
The latter however went on to set the benchmark of 1:21.405 for the top spot. Nikola Tsolov became the next driver to complete a push-lap, slotting into P2.
With Martinius Stenshorne then setting the top time, Tsolov bumped the Norwegian down with a 1:21.053. However, this lap time was not better than that of Camara, with the Invicta driver lining up on Pole for Sunday’s Feature Race.
Results
Camara claimed Pole position, with Tsolov joining him on the front row. Dunne, Stenshorne, Beganovic, Maini, Gabriele Mini, Roman Bilinski, León and Joshua Durksen complete the top 10.
Formula 2 returns for the Sprint Race at 14:15 local time.
