The 2025 Chinese GP Qualifying result sees Oscar Piastri take his maiden pole position, with George Russell in second and McLaren teammate Lando Norris in third.

Piastri’s Maiden Pole

Despite two wins in Formula 1, Piastri had never achieved a pole position in the series until today.

“Q2, I needed to find half a second, I didn’t do anything do obviously wrong, I was just genuinely struggling and Q3 just came alive. I felt like I put two, mostly good laps.”

Consistency was key for Piastri. Delivering a time of 1m 30.703s on opening runs, the Australian was then able to improve to a 1m 30.641s, a new track record.

Admittedly, Piastri believes that “there’s still quite a bit left on the table” and some of his laps were “a little bit scruffy.”

Therefore, this may be a promising sign for the race tomorrow if the Australian is able to put everything together and maximise the McLaren’s full potential.

“The last lap, I didn’t have much to lose going into the hairpin and I really sent it […] so just very proud to have ended up on pole.”

Unlike teammate Norris, who had to bail on his final lap in Q3, Piastri was able to perform under pressure to put in an impressive lap.

Russell’s Unexpected Success

Russell was surprised to find himself on the front row of the grid.

“It felt as good almost as a pole position because it was really unexpected. It all came together on that last lap and it was a messy session […] I was almost out in Q1 and I just didn’t have a good feeling.”

The Brit sat in 10th position with a 1m 32s just before his final Q1 run, only a tenth above the drop zone.

“I threw everything I had at it and it just came together on the last lap. To be ahead of a McLaren when there was no major mistakes from them is pretty big so pleased.”

An impressive last lap saw Russell jump ahead of Norris for the final front row position, with rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli lining up in eighth.

Norris Admits Struggles

After a flawless first weekend in Australia, taking the first pole position and win of the season, Norris admits that he is struggling this weekend.

Although the Brit’s P3 Qualifying result is a step up from yesterday’s P6 Sprint Qualifying result, the Championship contender will still be hoping to maximise and improve on this result during Sunday’s race.

“Better result, just still shows that it’s very close between everyone. We still don’t have the margin that we would love to have but a better job that we did yesterday, for sure. I just felt a lot more comfortable out there, not necessarily quicker than we were yesterday, but just more comfy.”

Comfortably sitting at P2 for much of Q3, just 0.090s behind his teammate, a late lap from Russell saw Norris demoted to the second row.

“That’s a good start considering how much we, or I have struggled so far this weekend.”

Norris has admitted that he has struggled to find the balance all weekend, topping just Free Practice 1 so far.

After qualifying P6 for the Sprint Race, Norris bought home one point after tyre issues saw him finish P8.

“A good job by Oscar,” Norris mentions, congratulating his McLaren teammate on his first pole position.
