Max Verstappen delivered under the Yas Marina floodlights to claim a decisive pole position for the final race of the 2025 Formula 1 season, beating title rivals Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in a high-pressure qualifying session.
With both championships on the line and track temperatures falling rapidly after sunset, the grid fight unfolded as one of the closest of the year and one of the most dramatic.
Q1 – Piastri Sets the Benchmark as Hamilton Crashes Out Early
Drivers waited for conditions to cool before action built in Q1, with several top contenders initially opting for used tyres. Track evolution proved huge and costly.
Oscar Piastri unleashed a stunning late lap to go fastest by nearly six tenths, while the pack behind compressed into mere hundredths. But the biggest headline came at the other end of the order: Lewis Hamilton was knocked out in Q1 again.
A mistake into Turn 12 on his final attempt left him just 0.008s short of escaping the drop zone. It marked his third straight Q1 elimination and fourth including Sprint Qualifying sessions, a brutal continuation of his late-season struggles.
Eliminated in Q1: Hamilton, Albon, Hulkenberg, Gasly, Colapinto
Q2 – Strategy Games Begin as Verstappen Sits Out Final Runs
Verstappen hit the track first in Q2, banking early laps on used tyres; a risky but potentially strategic move to keep fresh sets for Q3. George Russell then stole P1 on his sole attempt, indicating Mercedes still have enough raw speed to challenge up front.
With the midfield surging, Bortoleto and Alonso briefly appearing on the first two rows, the final runs became a gamble. Red Bull went bold, leaving Verstappen in the garage. It worked.
The Dutchman advanced comfortably, while the field behind tightened once again to a knife-edge fight.
Eliminated in Q2: Bearman, Sainz, Lawson, Antonelli, Stroll
Q3 – Verstappen Delivers as McLarens Run Out of Steam
The top ten split strategies: Verstappen, Russell, Leclerc on fresh tyres, and Norris, Piastri on used softs to save rubber for a final shot
Verstappen set a strong banker lap. McLaren initially couldn’t match it, forced to rely on their final runs with tyre temperatures finally in the right window.
The decisive laps arrived. Piastri went purple early with Norris close behind, but Verstappen went faster still, improving in every sector. Russell’s last attempt turned ragged through the final corners, leaving him unable to challenge the front three.
With perfect execution, the reigning champion secured a crucial pole, 0.201 seconds ahead of championship contender Norris.
What It Means for the Finale
Abu Dhabi has been a pole-winner’s paradise: 10 wins from the last 10 races have been from pole, and front row finished 1-2 in 7 of those 10 races.
While Verstappen does have pole advantage, Norris only needs to remain on the podium to secure the Driver’s Championship.
Tomorrow night under the lights, the 2025 World Drivers’ Championship will be decided in the desert.
