F1 | FP2 2025 Emilia Romagna GP | Piastri out in Front

The Tifosi were out in full force this afternoon, and engines roared ahead of F1 FP2 at the 2025 Emilia Romagna GP. Oscar Piastri took the top spot, with teammate Norris in second, and the Alpine of Gasly going third fastest.

The lights go Green!

The cars rolled out of the pits as FP2 got underway, with teams picking up where they left off earlier. In that session, it had been Piastri, Norris and Sainz that took the top spots. Overtaking is not easy at Imola and practice sessions are key for getting a feel of the car ahead of qualifying and the race.

The majority of drivers started on medium tyres, with the exception of Alonso and Hamilton, who both went straight onto the soft tyre.

Chaos for Colapinto at his first race weekend with Alpine!

Franco Colapinto had been noted to the FIA early on in the session for impeding one of Alonso’s laps. Alonso exclaimed, “Yeah I mean, I nearly crashed” over the radio.

Colapinto has settled in well to his new team so far this weekend. From the coverage of the practice sessions, he’s been keen to get stuck in and isn’t afraid to challenge his peers.

Ferrari are struggling

Times were tumbling as the drivers put in some good lap times. Staying at the top of the timesheet was proving to be difficult.

Lewis Hamilton came on the radio to complain about his brakes, stating “These damn brakes mate..” This isn’t good news for Ferrari at one of their home races.

Lewis’ teammate Charles Leclerc also reported problems. He stated that “We need to work on the entry of turn 5, 9, and 11. It’s critical I would say.”

Red Flag Comes Out

With seven minutes left of the session, RB driver Isack Hadjar found himself off of the track and in the wall. He tried to get the car back on track, but beached himself in the gravel trying to do so.

Replays showed that the cause of the crash was likely a snap of oversteer. This caused the driver to spin off of the track.

Two minutes to go…

Green flags were waved once more, allowing the drivers to put in their final lap or two of the session. The drivers also got a chance to perform a practice start. They hadn’t had the chance to complete this yet today after Bortoleto’s crash in FP1.

In the end, it was Piastri, Norris and Gasly in the top three. Russell and Verstappen completed the top five.

Who will be on top in Quali?

After the first two sessions of the weekend completed, our attention turns to tomorrow’s third and final practice session as well as the all important Qualifying session, taking place at 3PM UK Time on Saturday the 16th of May 2025.
