F1 FP2 | 2024 Abu Dhabi GP | McLaren On Top

Lando Norris topped the timings with a 1:23.517 for McLaren, followed by teammate Piastri with a 1:23.751 during F1 FP2 at the 2024 Abu Dhabi GP. Niko Hulkenberg was third with a 1:23.926 for Haas.

Green Light

Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon and Lance Stroll took to the track for the first time this weekend after rookies drove their cars during FP1.

Tsunoda was the first out in the RB.

Liam Lawson topped the timings with a 1:25.537 for RB yet was quickly replaced by Charles Leclerc with a 1:25.438.

The Ferrari driver topped the timings in FP1 however will take a 10-place grid penalty on Sunday after exceeding the battery allocation. 

A 1:25.020 took Lando Norris to the top, followed by Lewis Hamilton +0.311s behind.

Despite traffic, Oscar Piastri then topped the timings with a 1:24.932 for McLaren, after rookie Ryo Hirakawa drove his car in FP1.

However, Piastri was quickly replaced by Carlos Sainz with a 1:24.570 for Ferrari, with the Spanish driver also being replaced in FP1 by Arthur Leclerc.

On the Medium tyre, Norris set three purple sectors and topped the timing with a 1:24.332, with the Constructor’s Championship becoming closer in reach.

Verstappen Vs Russell

Max Verstappen went P6 with a 1:25.265, ahead of George Russell in P5 with a 1:25.263.

Taking into regard the off-track feud that has taken place between the drivers this week, that could be an interesting third row come Sunday.

Following this, Verstappen reported that ā€œthe understeer is ridiculousā€, with the Champion clearly unhappy with the set-up this weekend.

In The Pits

With 35 minutes remaining, most of the cars took to the pits, with Zhou Guanyu and Franco Colapinto being the only drivers on track.

Norris still topped the timings with a 1:24.332, followed by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

Soft Tyre RunsĀ 

With 30 minutes remaining, much of the field made their way back onto the track to begin their Soft tyre runs.

Piastri topped the timings with a 1:23.751 but was quickly replaced by teammate Norris with a 1:23.571.

Sainz completed the top three with a 1:24.099.

Verstappen struggled on his first Soft tyre run, putting his Red Bull P6 with a 1:24.598. He was quickly dropped down to P10 as other drivers set their times.

Trouble For Williams

Colapinto was put on the back foot once again after running wide seemingly caused enough floor damage to end his session.

He was P20 in the timings with a 1:25.265.

With 15 minutes remaining, Albon was also slow on the main straight, reporting a potential problem with the driveshaft.

The problem seemed to arise after the driver stamped on the throttle out of the Turn 5 hairpin.

Therefore, he limped back to the pits in third gear, currently P9 with a 1:24.269.

10 Minutes Remaining

With 10 minutes remaining, Norris still topped the timings with a 1:23.517 for McLaren, followed by teammate Piastri with a 1:23.751.

Niko Hulkenberg was third with a 1:23.926 for Haas, his last weekend with the team before he goes to Sauber for the 2025 season.

Despite the earlier issue, Albon’s session was not over as he made his way back onto the track with six minutes remaining.

Jack Doohan was P19 for Alpine in his first ever FP2 session, 1.4s off the pace.
