Abbi Pulling was victorious in a shortened F1 Academy Race 1 around Zandvoort at the 2024 Dutch GP. It was yet another dominant drive from the British driver, allowing her to gain a greater advantage over her championship rival, Doriane Pin. In case you missed it, here’s what you need to know about Race 1 around Zandvoort.

Lights Out

Championship Rivals Abbi Pulling and Doriane Pin started alongside one another on the front row of the grid. When the lights went out, the Alpine junior driver got the better start allowing her to gain a much needed gap to her championship rival behind. Meanwhile, Pin and Martí were battling into turn one, with the Mercedes driver managing to hold off the Spaniard. Wild Card entry Nina Gademan continued with her impressive form in her debut race, managing to overtake Aurelia Nobels before the end of the starting lap.

Lap Two saw close battles on track, with drivers having to defend as if their lives depended on it. The Haas livery of Chloe Chambers was locked in a close battle with the Puma livery of Nobels, who was desperate to not drop two places within the opening two laps.

False Starts and Penalties

Doriane Pin, Lola Lovinfosse and Amna Al Qubaisi were all noted for a starting infringement, with all three drivers potentially jumping the start. In the end it was only Lovinfosse who was determined to have correctly taken the start out of those drivers. In turn, five-second time penalties were awarded to Pin and Al Qubaisi. The Mercedes junior was now tasked with creating a big enough gap to avoid a post-race drop from the podium when the penalty was added.

Whilst this was going down, American driver Chambers was able to make a decisive move on Nobels. Chambers overtook the Brazilian driver down the pit straight to claim P6. This allowed Chambers to gain critical Championship points.

Conservative racing from our F1 Academy Drivers

With half of the race distance complete, Pulling had opened up a gap of 3.4 seconds to Pin. She looked to secure a dominant victory around the Dutch track. However, the vast majority of the field were driving in a safe manner, as to not risk damaging their cars for Race Two which was set to start an hour after the Race One ended. This strategic play from the drivers allowed for a clean yet aggressive approach in the later stages of the race.

Final Lap overtakes and Podium streaks continued

A battle that continued throughout the entire race saw its end on the final lap. The Red Bull junior Hamda Al Qubaisi made a bold move down into Turn 1, overtaking Lia Block. It was a well-executed manoeuvre for the Emirati driver. However, closer to the front of the field, Pin looked unlikely to pull out a five-second margin against Martí.

Abbi Pulling secured a yet another commanding victory in the F1 Academy Race 1 at the 2024 Dutch GP, winning by almost three seconds. Despite her best efforts, Pin was unable to create a margin to those behind her. Once the penalty was added, Pulling’s main championship rival was demoted to P5. Narea Martí managed to hold off the home-town hero of Maya Weug for second. Meanwhile, Weug delighted her home fans with a podium finish in P3. Nina Gademan, in her first F1 Academy race, impressed with a P4 finish, marking a solid debut.

With everything to play for in Race Two, many drivers will be fighting for crucial points and places in the championship.
