Colton Herta Steps Closer to F1 with First FP1 Session Confirmed

Colton Herta of Hitech GP will make his FP1 debut with Cadillac at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The 26-year-old IndyCar veteran will also take part in three additional practice sessions across the season.

Colton Herta joined the team as its test driver ahead of the 2026 season. He has since emerged as one of the most sought-after names for the new Formula 1 outfit.

Herta’s Formula 2 Success

Following his 7 year stint in IndyCar, Herta made a jarring move to the formula series, hoping to continue his luck. The nine-time IndyCar winner scored his first Formula 2 points on his debut in the Australian Grand Prix Feature Race. Graeme Lowdon didn’t just note his adaptation in the new series, he openly praised it. The team principal spoke, reinforcing the impression, adding, “Colton is a top talent, which he has not only proved by building an impressive resume in the NTT IndyCar Series before joining us, but also with a strong start to his Formula 2 season.

Herta on the Formula 1 Opportunities

“I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team car for the first time. I am looking forward to working closely with the team in a full Grand Prix environment and am fully focused on learning from every appearance,” the Cadillac Junior reflected.

“I hope I can contribute to the overall race weekend and help the team, Checo and Valtteri as much as possible.”

Herta is aiming to make his full-time Formula 1 debut in the near future. The American driver, in an attempt to obtain enough super license points to be eligible for a spot in the series, has entered Formula 2. He will be targeting a top-eight championship finish to secure the required points.

The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix will take place from 12 June, 2026 – 14 June, 2026.
