Trident have confirmed that Christian Mansell will be competing for the team for the rest of the 2024 FIA F2 season, starting this weekend in Baku.

Mansell will be replacing Roman Stanek, whose Formula 2 contract has come to an end by mutual agreement with Trident.

Fresh from a strong 2024 Formula 3 campaign, Mansell finished fifth in the Driver’s Championship, achieving five podium finishes this season with ART Grand Prix.

Prior to that, Mansell competed with Campos Racing in the 2023 FIA Formula 3 Championship, his first full season in the series. He finished twelfth in the standings with 60 points after achieving two podium finishes.

Taking part in 2023 post-season testing with Trident at Yas Marina, Christian Mansell has prior experience both within an F2 car and the Trident team.

“I can’t wait to make my FIA Formula 2 debut with Trident Motorsport,” said Mansell.

“I’m extremely happy to race with this Italian team on the Baku street circuit and in the next two events before the end of the season. It will be a fiery debut on a challenging track like the Azerbaijani one, but I must confess I’m more excited than nervous.”

Trident Team Manager Giacomo Ricci added: “We are extremely delighted to field Australian driver Christian Mansell in the next three rounds of the FIA Formula 2 Championship. I consider him one of the most talented emerging drivers we have seen this year in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he was in contention for the title until the final round in Monza.

“Christian is a complete driver, quick in qualifying, and extremely good at managing tyres and overtaking. Making his debut in Baku will certainly be an ambitious goal, not easy at all.

“We have carried out dedicated preparation work with him, and I am convinced that it will pay dividends, especially if there will be no interruptions in the free practice session. I am sure there are all the conditions to do well.”

Formula 3 Future

Mansell will hope that his short FIA Formula 2 campaign, which will see him race in Baku, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, will be strong enough to secure him a permanent seat for the 2025 season.

This comes after the news that 2024 Formula 3 runner-up Gabriele Minì will make his Formula 2 debut this weekend in Baku. He will replace Oliver Bearman, with the British driver competing for Haas F1 Team following Kevin Magnussen’s one-race suspension.
