Charles Leclerc has ‘mixed feelings’ over Miami performance but praises Mclaren as being “Unbelievably quick.”
Charles Leclerc had a tough start to his Miami GP weekend. With a spin that took him out of FP1, thrown into the Sprint Shootout. With only a few laps of data, all on hard tyres.
However, the Monegasque showed his skill in the shootout and sprint race, placing second in both, then qualifying second for the main race.
As the main race began, Leclerc narrowly missed Perez diving the inside and locking up.
When asked about the incident, Leclerc admitted, “After the first corner I couldn’t believe I was still in the race.” He went on to say that the Mexican driver was “way too optimistic,” with the move.
The rest of the race went well for Leclerc, although a late safety car meant the last half of the race was tyre management. As those around him had newer tyres.
When commenting on the pace of the McLarens, Leclerc openly called the pace unbelievable. Saying he was surprised by Mclaren’s pace was “More than what we (Ferrari) expected.”
The Mclaren’s had been strong all weekend.
They showed good pace in the Sprint Shootout thanks to their upgrades.
However, he had a DNF in the sprint and a struggle on the soft compound tyres, in qualifying.
Which was not representative of their pace in the race. With Lando taking his Maiden win.
Despite the strength of the McLarens, Leclerc capitalised during the weekend, resulting in a third place for him on Sunday.
The Monegasque driver has finished every race and sprint race in the Top 4 this season.
Ferrari are the only top team yet to bring upgrades this season. Ferrari are bringing an upgrade package that in the Post-Race press conference Leclerc said he hopes “Will be as good as theirs (Mclaren’s).”
It is expected the upgrades will be brought to Imola.
