In one of Formula 1’s worst kept secrets, Wolkswagen’s Audi brand had reportedly acquired a 75percent stake in Sauber.

With the FIA and Formula 1 announcing the 2026 Power Unit Regulations, confirming a that price cap for manufacturers will be included, helping to limit costs, making a Formula 1 project more enticing than in previous years, also confirmed was the removal of the MGU-H, one of the more expensive and complex components of the current Power Units.

The removal of the MGU-H was one of the main regulation changes that would green light an entry in to F1 for Audi.

Although the Alfa Romeo moniker are very prominent with the team, the current agreement is no more than a glorified title sponsorship deal, with Sauber running majority of the team with support from Ferrari as Power Unit suppliers.

Power Unit Regulations are changing, opening the door for Audi to accept the F1 challenge.

With Audi reportedly securing a 75 percent stake in the team, it would become a ‘works’ entry for the German manufacturer.

Audi will continue to use Sauber’s Hinwil site for chassis construction, with the Power Unit development and production being carried out at Audi’s site in Neuburg, Germany.
