Atlassian Williams F1 Team have announced that Alex Albon will remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
Albon first joined Williams in 2022, and has been central in the team’s rebuilding efforts over the previous five seasons. In 2025 he notably helped the team to a strong fifth place finish in the constructors’ championship. This represented the team’s best result since the Williams family’s departure in 2020.
A Season of Struggles
Many took Williams’ strong showing in 2025 as a sign that the efforts to turn the team’s fortunes around initiated by current owners Dorilton Capital were working as planned. However, 2026 has proved to be a far more challenging season for both Williams and Albon.
The team’s car was completed late and quickly proved incapable of regularly challenging for points. Albon himself has also often struggled to keep pace with his team mate Carlos Sainz. The result is that the Thai-British driver has only scored five points this year, compared to 42 points at this stage last season.
These issues have led to ongoing speculation about Williams’ driver line-up for 2027. In particular, many rumours tout Cadillac’s Sergio Perez as a potential target for the Grove-based outfit for next season.
Williams have shown their trust in Albon by retaining him for next year though. This faith was also echoed by Albon, who was keen to emphasise in his renewal statement that “One tough year doesn’t tell the full picture”. He also committed himself to, “doing whatever it takes to get us back up the grid.”, with such dedication doubtless playing a key role in endearing Albon so heavily to the team in the first place.

A Prosperous Future?
Notably, Albon’s renewal only represents a one-year extension of his previous deal with Williams, which he signed in 2024. While both he and the team do seem to have faith that their current slump is only temporary, it also appears that Albon wishes to avoid being locked down if Williams’ trajectory does not improve soon.
Either way, the deal brings much-needed stability to the team at a time of heavy speculation. It also means that Albon will continue to extend his record as Williams’ longest-serving driver, having surpassed Nigel Mansell’s tenure with the team at this year’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
It remains to be seen who will drive alongside Albon at Williams in 2027. His current team mate Carlos Sainz has yet to announce his plans for next season.
