Alex Albon believes he was capable of getting some vital points for Williams had it not been for a Carlos Sainz spin which took the Thai driver out.
The British based team had a Canadian Grand Prix weekend to forget. Both cars couldn’t make it to the finish line. Logan Sargent ended up spinning his car in the damp conditions causing a safety car, and Albon was an innocent bystander when it came to Sainz losing control of his Ferrari.
With Williams only having two points this season, Montreal looked like a golden opportunity as Albon got himself into Q3. The ex-Red Bull driver thought his team made all the right moves but it just wasn’t their day.
He said: “I think when I look at the race as a whole, it seemed like we didn’t take much risk in our strategy, but we were making good calls the whole time.
“You look at some of the guys that stayed out on the inter, not pitting for a new one in the middle of the race. We kind of just did what we felt was right for us.
“And even if it didn’t work out sometimes, we kept getting back the positions. We kept fighting back into the points and I was enjoying it out there.”
Montreal has been deemed by many fans as the best race of the season so far. Mixed conditions led to difference in strategies. A wet track is an opportunity for the drivers to show their true skill.
A wet track will often bring plenty of spins and crashes as well. The Williams No.23 was unfortunate enough to find himself close to two.
Sergio Perez had to retire his car following a spin at turn 6. Sainz then followed shortly after at the same corner, losing control of his Ferrari. Albon could only do so much in these circumstances.
He said: “There’s a lot to play for and I was having a lot of fun. And then two laps in a row, two drivers went off in the same corner.
“The first one, I lost the position. I had to avoid the [Perez] crash. And then the lap after Carlos obviously had his spin.
“I was kind of expecting him to stop, but the way it kind of rolled around and I thought when I made my initial move to go left, ‘OK, that’s fine. I’ve got a position’.
“And then as I saw him coming and rolling around me, I was like, ‘OK, he’s going to clip my rear right’. Bit of a passenger. So frustrating because for sure points were available today.”
