Wehrlein’s victory in London catapulted him to the top of the Formula E championship standings. Amid chaos, his strategic brilliance shone through, securing a crucial win in the penultimate race of the season.
The first leg of the season finale doubleheader at the 2024 Hankook London E-Prix saw Pascal Wehrlein from TAG Heuer Porsche clinch an impressive victory. Amidst a race filled with chaos and strategic battles, Wehrlein secured the win and took the lead in the championship standings, now holding an eight-point advantage over Mitch Evans from Jaguar TCS Racing.
Wehrlein: “I saw all the chaos behind.”
The race was hit with several drivers affected by penalties, setting the stage for a dramatic event. Pascal Wehrlein, starting from a strong position, initially lost a place to Norman Nato, dropping to third. However, the real chaos began when Jake Dennis made contact with Robin Frijns, sending the Envision driver into the wall and causing a multi-car collision that included Sam Bird. This incident prompted the first safety car of the day to clear the debris and Frijns’ damaged car.
Reflecting on the chaotic nature of the race, Wehrlein said, “I saw all the chaos behind and obviously the cars, when they crashed, they are quite loud. I guess it was a chaotic race, but in the front it was not that chaotic.”
Strategy is key
Wehrlein’s approach to the race was marked by patience and strategic energy management. Despite losing a position at the start, he focused on saving energy and timing his Attack Mode activations to perfection. By Lap 22, Wehrlein had taken his first Attack Mode, briefly losing and then regaining the lead. His strategy was to use the surplus energy later in the race, a plan that was executed flawlessly.
“A race can change very quickly. You can never plan races before. You’re trying to make a strategy, but also the team needs to be very quick in reacting to the current situation. And I think today was perfect, what we did. A well-deserved win,” Wehrlein explained.
Navigating the collisions
As the race progressed, more incidents unfolded, including further contacts involving Dennis and a retirement for António Félix da Costa due to a suspension issue. Despite the chaos, Wehrlein maintained his composure and continued to execute his strategy. On Lap 28, he activated his second Attack Mode, managing to keep his lead despite intense pressure from Evans.
A late safety car on Lap 34, brought out to remove debris, added two laps to the race. This reset the field, and Wehrlein had to defend his position in the final laps. Evans attempted to close the gap, but Wehrlein’s superior energy management ensured he stayed ahead.

“Tomorrow is as important as today was. It’s only 50% done. The Jaguars were a bit quicker in qualifying than us, so a bit of work for us there. But our race pace looked very strong, and I think tomorrow will be super tight again,” Wehrlein noted, looking ahead to the final race of the season.
The London E-Prix has set the stage for a thrilling finale, and fans are eagerly anticipating whether Wehrlein can continue his winning form and secure the championship for himself and the TAG Heuer Porsche team.
