The Formula 1-engined Mercedes-AMG One set a blistering time of 6:35:183 around the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit.
It is an incredible achievement for the German manufacturer smashing the previous record set by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
By contrast, the Porsche did in a time of 6:43.300 in 2021.
The multi-million-dollar hypercar completed the lap on October 28th driving almost 13,000 miles as the track dried off.
The car uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 that is similar to the engine used by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on at typical F1 weekend.
It works in combination with a hybrid system and the driver has wings, flaps and vents at his disposal for maximum attack around the track.

The car was driven by Maro Engel who “didn’t expect to set such a lap time” with difficult track conditions.
“That was really an unforgettable experience. In some crucial areas of the track, it hadn’t dried completely yet and was therefore tricky. That was a special challenge.
We tried to find the optimal deployment strategy during the pre-tests. Like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on their race weekends, I also had to deploy the electrical energy of the hybrid drive in the best possible way. That’s not easy, especially with this length of track. “
“In addition, the DRS function had to be used optimally. But that’s also a real Formula 1 feeling.” he added
The lap was set on the final attempt with the Nürburgring 24-Hour winner and German DTM driver setting off only 29 seconds before the circuit officially closed at 5:15pm.
Incredibly, this isn’t Engel’s first record. He had success in 2020 in the formidable Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, setting a production car record of 6:48.047.
It’s the first time a machine of this standard has taken to the ‘Ring since the Porsche ran their hybrid 918 Spyder back in 2013.
Mercedes have thrown down a gauntlet for other car manufacturers and it’s one they will struggle to match.
