Jorge Martín produced a commanding performance at Silverstone to win Saturday’s Sprint and extend his advantage at the top of the MotoGP World Championship. Starting from pole, the Aprilia rider controlled the race from the opening lap to the chequered flag, while Ai Ogura and Marco Bezzecchi completed a historic all-Aprilia podium.
The result marked Aprilia’s first-ever 1-2-3 finish in a MotoGP Sprint and capped off a remarkable Saturday for the manufacturer. For Marc Márquez, however, the Sprint was one to forget as a lack of rear grip left the reigning World Champion fighting outside the podium places.
Martín Controls the Sprint from the Start
Martín made the perfect getaway from pole, immediately taking control into Turn 1 with Ogura settling into second.
Fabio Di Giannantonio initially moved into third, while Bezzecchi and Marc Márquez battled behind him. Márquez managed to move ahead of Di Giannantonio early on, but his progress would soon come to a halt. Ogura briefly came under pressure from Di Giannantonio on Lap 2, but the Trackhouse rider held firm. By Lap 4, Martín had built a lead of around half a second over Ogura and looked firmly in control.
The biggest early setback came for Raúl Fernández. Running close behind Bezzecchi, the Trackhouse rider lost the front at Turn 4 and crashed out, promoting Álex Márquez into sixth.
Bezzecchi Charges Through the Field
Bezzecchi was one of the stars of the Sprint. After starting behind the leading group, the Aprilia rider gradually closed in on Di Giannantonio and eventually made his move for third with four laps remaining.
The Italian had been rapidly gaining on Di Giannantonio, cutting more than a second from the gap before making the decisive pass at Copse. Behind them, Marc Márquez was struggling badly. The Ducati rider was suffering from a lack of rear grip, leaving him unable to respond as riders around him gained ground.
Álex Márquez had already passed his brother for fifth, while Pedro Acosta then moved ahead of the reigning World Champion with just over a lap remaining. Joan Mir followed soon after, dropping Márquez further down the order.
A Difficult Sprint for Marc Márquez
Márquez’s problems continued right to the chequered flag. On the final lap, Franco Morbidelli moved past him to take eighth, leaving Márquez ninth. The Ducati rider ultimately salvaged just one championship point, crossing the line only 0.027 seconds ahead of the next rider.
It was a particularly costly result given the championship battle. While Martín took the maximum Sprint points, Márquez could only watch his title rival increase the gap.
Aprilia Makes History
At the front, there was never any serious threat to Martín’s victory. The championship leader completed a lights-to-flag win to claim his second Sprint victory of the 2026 season. Ogura secured second and limited the damage in the championship, while Bezzecchi completed the podium after an impressive return from his recent injury struggles.
The result was historic for Aprilia, giving the manufacturer its first-ever 1-2-3 finish in a MotoGP Sprint.
Álex Márquez brought the leading Ducati home in fourth, followed by Di Giannantonio in fifth. Acosta finished sixth for KTM, with Mir seventh and Morbidelli eighth ahead of Marc Márquez.
The Championship Picture
The Sprint result has significant implications for the title fight.
Martín’s victory gives him an additional three points over Ogura, extending his championship advantage to 17 points heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix. Bezzecchi’s third place also moves him ahead of Marc Márquez in the championship standings, putting the returning Aprilia rider into third.
With Martín now carrying strong momentum and Aprilia demonstrating impressive pace across the entire leading group, Sunday’s 20-lap Grand Prix promises to be a major test for the rest of the field.
