With chaos and last minute racing, Formula 2 came to Silverstone with Nikola Tsolov taking the sprint win. Gabriele Mini and Rafael Villagomez.
Strikes at the Start
Championship leader Gabriele Minì started from reverse-grid pole for the Sprint Race, sharing the front row with Hitech’s Ritomo Miyata. Rafael Villagómez and Joshua Dürksen lined up just behind, ready to challenge at lights out.
Villagómez made the perfect start, sweeping past Miyata into Turn 1 to move into second, while Nikola Tsolov rocketed up the order with a superb launch to snatch third. Miyata slipped back to fourth ahead of Dürksen, as Roman Bilinski quickly closed in on Kush Maini in the fight for sixth.
The Safety Car was deployed before the opening lap could be completed after contact between Sebastián Montoya and John Bennett at the final corner forced both drivers out of the race. Montoya managed to pull his PREMA into an escape road, while Bennett’s Trident stopped on the start/finish straight.
The replays showed that Montoya took evasive action to avoid Colton Herta, sending his car through the gravel. The dust and debris appeared to limit Bennett’s visibility, leaving the Trident driver with little chance to avoid colliding with the rear of the PREMA, ending both drivers’ afternoons.
Bilinski on a Charge
The man who brought the most drama was DAMS Racing’s Roman Bilinski. Ritomo Miyata initially went into a defensive mode, successfully holding off a charging Roman Bilinski on Lap 12. But the Hitech driver’s defenses couldn’t hold forever. By Lap 14, Bilinski finally forced a breakthrough at the same corner. It was a move that completely changed Miyata’s rhythm. Dino Beganovic and Alex Dunne took the moment to capitalise on the resulting lack of pace, ultimately swallowing up the Hitech and pushing Miyata to tenth.
Meanwhile, Tsolov was stalking Gabriele Minì with a clear DRS advantage,and finally pulled the trigger on Lap 16. Despite Tsolov throwing the car down the inside at Stowe, the championship leader refused to flinch. Minì perfectly anticipated the attack and aggressively shut it down.
Further back, the midfield delivered the boldest moves of the afternoon. Kush Maini executed an incredible sweep around the outside of Joshua Dürksen to claim fourth. Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak clearly followed and just a lap later, Inthraphuvasak mirrored that exact same audacity, sweeping past Dürksen on the outside line to snatch fifth.
A Last Moment Miracle
Dino Beganovic kept his relentless charge alive, carving down the inside of Joshua Dürksen at the Vale Chicane to claim sixth. Roman Bilinski wasted no time, slipping right through the open door to push the Invicta Racing driver even further. Martinius Stenshorne spun, taking a hit from Nico Varrone who was caught in the crossfire of a scrap with Colton Herta for sixteenth place.
The simmering battle for the victory finally boiled over on the very last lap. A costly lock-up into Brooklands left the inside line wide open, and Nikola Tsolov didn’t hesitate, sweeping past to snatch the race lead exactly when it mattered most.
Minì’s secured win completely unraveled with a lock-up through the Maggotts and Becketts, dragging Rafael Villagómez right onto his gearbox. Despite the late threat, the running order held. Tsolov kept his nerve through the final corners to steal a dramatic Sprint Race victory at Silverstone, leaving Minì to salvage second place, with Villagómez rounding out a hard-fought podium.
Results
Nikola Tsolov took his fifth win ahead of Gabriele Minì and Villagómez. Maini, Inthraphuvasak, Beganovic, Bilinski and Dürksen rounded up the scoring position.
