Barcelona has already delivered a fascinating start to the weekend, and qualifying now looks set to be one of the most important sessions of the 2026 season so far.
George Russell topped the rookie-filled FP1 on Friday morning. Afternoon belonged to McLaren, who struck back in FP2 with Lando Norris leading the way ahead of Russell and Oscar Piastri. Mercedes then returned to the top in FP3, with Russell once again setting the pace as the fight at the front tightened heading into qualifying.
With major upgrades arriving across the grid, this weekend is expected to provide one of the clearest indications yet of the true competitive order. McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull all appear firmly in the mix. While championship leader Kimi Antonelli arrives chasing a sixth consecutive victory.
Track evolution, tyre management and finding a clear lap are all expected to play a major role around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where the margins at the front have looked incredibly close throughout practice.
