MotoGP Friday Round-Up | Álex Márquez Leads the Way in Jerez

Friday at Jerez delivered a mix of pace, pressure, and penalties, with Álex Márquez emerging as the rider to beat. However, several key contenders were left with work to do heading into Saturday.

From a VR46 1-2 in the morning session to a dominant lap from Álex Márquez in Practice, the competitive picture shifted throughout the day.

VR46 Dominate FP1 as Di Giannantonio Sets the Early Pace

The opening session belonged to Fabio Di Giannantonio, who surged to the top of the timesheets in FP1. The Italian was joined at the top by his teammate, as VR46 locked out the top two positions in the morning.

Behind them, Álex Márquez slotted into third, with several key contenders, including Marco Bezzecchi and Marc Márquez, also running near the front.

However, it wasn’t a clean session for everyone. Jorge Martín suffered a fall during the Practice outlap, an early sign of what would become a challenging Friday for the Aprilia rider.

Álex Márquez Turns Up the Pace in Practice

As the afternoon session unfolded, the pace intensified, and it was Álex Márquez who ultimately set the benchmark. The Gresini rider delivered a standout lap of 1:35.704, finishing the day comfortably fastest and over three tenths clear of Di Giannantonio.

Márquez looked in control throughout the session, firmly placing him as the rider to beat heading into qualifying. Behind him, the order remained tight, with Bezzecchi completing the top three.

Incidents and Pressure in a Crucial Session

Practice was far from straightforward.

Francesco Bagnaia crashed early in the session at Turn 1, disrupting his rhythm from the outset. Later on, Martín’s difficult day continued as he suffered another crash, while multiple riders struggled to secure safe passage into the top 10.

Among them was Pedro Acosta, who endured a difficult session and ultimately missed out on a Q2 spot. For the first time this season, he finished outside the top 10 and was forced into Q1. At a circuit like Jerez, where overtaking is limited, that setback could prove costly.

Martín Handed Grid Penalty After Incident

Adding further intrigue to the weekend is the situation involving Jorge Martín.

Following an incident with Alex Marquez during Friday’s running, Martín has been handed a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race. The stewards ruled that the move warranted punishment, dealing a blow to the Aprilia rider’s weekend.

The penalty means that even if Martín delivers a strong qualifying performance, he will start further back than expected, adding another layer of difficulty in what is shaping up to be a competitive race.

A Wide Open Weekend Ahead

With Márquez setting the pace, Acosta under pressure, and Martín carrying a grid penalty, the picture at Jerez is already competitive.

As the paddock turns its focus to qualifying, Friday’s events have ensured that the margins remain tight.
