F1 FP2 | 2025 British GP | Norris Back on Top

FP2 for the 2025 British GP saw Lando Norris surge to the top of the times in front of a passionate home crowd. The McLaren driver laid down a blistering lap late in the hour to lead the Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was present in the top five, it was McLaren and Ferrari that looked sharpest across both short and long runs.

Early On, Ferrari Momentum Continues

After Lewis Hamilton led the way in FP1, he quickly picked up where he left off, topping the early order in FP2 with a 1:27.280 on Mediums. Leclerc followed closely, only 0.215s behind, before Verstappen split the pair with 52 minutes remaining. That trio traded top times through the first 15 minutes, but the run plan quickly changed across the pits. Piastri briefly took over at the top before Hamilton responded again with a 1:26.902, reasserting Ferrari’s control at the halfway point.

Impediments were a talking point early, with Norris and Lawson each encountering slower cars during flying laps. Despite those hiccups, teams settled into rhythm as track evolution continued.

Soft Runs Shake Things Up

As the field transitioned to Softs with around 30 minutes left, the leaderboard began to shuffle rapidly. Leclerc was first to break into the 1:26.2 range, only for Hamilton and Piastri to follow. Then came the standout lap many had waited for. Lando Norris fired in a 1:25.816 with 28 minutes remaining, a time that held through the end of the session.

Verstappen, meanwhile, was uncharacteristically quiet on softs. Sitting P8 with just under half an hour remaining, he managed to claw his way to P5 but still finished 0.498s behind Norris. Hamilton improved to P2 on his second attempt, before Leclerc pipped him by 0.079s to lock in P2 by the checkered flag.

New Faces Top Midfield Madness

One of the surprises came from Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, who briefly topped the timesheets with a 1:26.383 on Softs. That time was ultimately good enough for P6. Isack Hadjar also showed strong form for Racing Bulls, ending up P9 and only 0.708s off the front.

From Norris in P1 to Lawson in P10, the gap was just 0.808 seconds. The top 10 featured five different teams, including a quietly strong run from Lance Stroll in seventh and George Russell just behind in eighth. Alexander Albon slotted just outside in P11, again showing Williams’ solid one-lap potential.

F1 returns for FP3 tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. local time.
