Group Stages

As the conditions had drastically improved from the FP2 session, Group A got qualifying underway on a drying but dusty circuit. Times dropped rapidly in the final minutes, with Jean-Éric Vergne going quickest with a time of 1:09.460, ahead of Jake Dennis. Edoardo Mortara and Nick Cassidy also advanced, the latter snatching P4 at the flag. Zane Maloney impressed early but was bumped out late.

In Group B, the track was fully dry but still sketchy off-line. Taylor Barnard stunned the field with a 1:08.968, matching Nyck de Vries to the thousandth. Barnard taking the top spot by setting the time first. Sébastien Buemi and Dan Ticktum also moved on. Pascal Wehrlein, despite briefly leading, was shuffled down to P7 and later placed under investigation for driving unnecessarily slowly.

Duels Stage

The quarter-finals saw Dennis beat Mortara, Cassidy knock out Vergne, De Vries edge Buemi (in a Toyota WEC face-off), and Barnard narrowly top Ticktum. In the semis, Cassidy faltered with a mysterious drop in pace, allowing Dennis to cruise through. Barnard continued his dream run by defeating De Vries with a rapid 1:06.759.

In the final, experience won out. Barnard made a mistake in Turn 13, and Dennis capitalized, setting a clean 1:06.713 to take his first pole of the season for Andretti Formula E.

What to Watch For

A few things were clear after the FE Qualifying session for the 2025 Jakarta E-Prix. Dennis will want to control the pace from the front, but Barnard won’t make it easy. De Vries looks sharp and starts from P3, while Cassidy aims to rebound after a shaky semifinal. Watch for big recovery drives from Vergne, Wehrlein, and Evans, who all start deeper than anyone expected. With high temperatures and tight walls, expect some drama.

Also of note, since Round 12 isn’t a double header, teams won’t need to stop for a pit boost. It will be interesting to see how overtaking unfolds with the lack of pit stops. Drivers like Ticktum even commented on how difficult he believed it would be to overtake on Jakarta’s streets.
