Formula 2 in Australia: What happened last year?

Formula 2 in Australia kicks off the 2025 championship. But what happened in 2024?

The 2024 Formula 2 race in Melbourne was nothing short of chaos. With first-lap crashes, and dominant wins, the weekend had seemingly everything fans could’ve seen.

Melbourne will open the Formula 2 season in 2025! Before cars hit the track, here’s a recap of everything that happened in last year’s race.

Sprint Race Recap

It was a dominant victory for Isack Hadjar. The new Formula 1 driver managed to lead every single lap of the race. However, the win was shortly lived for the french driver as he was later awarded a 10-second time penalty for causing a colision.

The collision in question took out both his teammate Pepe Marti and championship rival Gabriel Bortoleto. The incident, which saw Hadjar attempt to overtake Roman Staněk, left Marti and Bortoleto in the wall right in front of the pit lane exit.

The win was then inherited by the Czech driver winning his first-ever Formula 2 race. Hauger and Maini were also promoted to the podium.

Elsewhere on the grid, Victor Martins showcased his talent in the series. Making an incredible charge from P21 to P13 in half a lap.

Feature Race Recap

Dennis Hauger managed to keep his pole position and convert it into the race leader. Holding off now, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli throughout the first few laps. However, Hauger’s lead slowly faltered when Kush Maini charged through the field on medium tyres. The Alpine academy driver took the lead by Lap 9.

In motorsport, a safety car can make or break your race result. Unfortunately for Invicta Racing’s Kush Maini, a poorly timed safety car ruined his race. At one point the Indian Driver looked certain to win the race, however, the VSC came at the wrong time. Seeing him finish outside the points-scoring places.

Isack Hadjar, however, timed the safety car perfectly, managing to secure his pitstop during the period. Hadjar rejoined the race in first. Making up for the stripped win the previous day, the Campos driver controlled the race and won by 4.4 seconds.

With a predominantly rookie grid in 2025, it will be interesting to see how they fare around Albert Park. A track that has become well-known for its chaos during the feeder series.
