What Is F1 in Schools?

F1 in Schools is a global STEM challenge, endorsed by Formula 1, for students aged nine to 19.

Students design, manufacture, and race miniature Formula 1 cars while judges evaluate their speed, engineering innovation, design, and branding.

Currently, the initiative operates in over 40 countries, with its key aim to introduce young students to engineering in a fun environment.

The competition takes place annually, starting with Regional and National Finals. The Champions of the National Finals are then invited to compete in the World Finals, hosted in a different location each year.

Grantham College & University Centre

A team of students from Grantham College & University Centre will compete in the prestigious 2024/25 F1 in Schools Competition.

A dynamic group of T Level students from the Business and Engineering departments will combine technical expertise and strategic thinking to achieve success.

In addition, the students will also nurture their skills in marketing, sponsorship, and public speaking as they prepare to present to a panel of industry experts.

Crucially, participation provides students with real-world experience in teamwork, leadership, and project management, preparing them for future careers in engineering, business, and technology.

After competing in the UK regional finals, taking place across England, Scotland, and Wales between November 2024 and March 2025, the best performing teams will advance to the Lenovo F1 in Schools 2025 UK National Finals.

This event will take place over three days, with teams from across the UK competing for a coveted spot on the F1 in Schools podium and the prestigious title of National Champions.

Primarily, the project began with a crucial team-building exercise, with the students working together to build a LEGO McLaren Formula 1 car, emphasising collaboration and creativity from the starting line.

Notably, after already securing two sponsors to support their journey, the Grantham College team is also seeking further sponsorship opportunities. Individuals or businesses can contact the college to connect directly with the project’s sponsorship and marketing managers.

Making An Impact

Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Formula 1 said

“Offering a way to learn Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) related subjects in such an exciting way is achieving great results and we know we are increasing the intake of students into Engineering careers.”

Therefore, there is no doubt that the F1 in Schools initiative holds great benefits. These include developing invaluable interpersonal skills, competing with other teams in a controlled environment, and seeing ideas and designs come to life.

As well as this, the competition aims to encourage individuals, from a range of diverse backgrounds, to integrate STEM subjects into their futures, inspiring the next generation.
