At the start, with a clean first lap, Russell and Hamilton held their positions whilst Norris lost a position to Max Verstappen. By lap 18 the crowd began to roar as the rain came down. Fans were on the edge of their seats as they watched Hamilton close in on George Russell. As a result of the rain, Russell struggled to manage his tyres.

But the antics didn’t stop there as changing conditions saw the McLarens and Mercedes swap positions multiple times. As a result, the McLarens climbed to a 1-2 by lap 20. On lap 40, the British weather came into play as clear skies and a burning hot sun reappeared over the circuit, prompting a scramble for soft tyres. The timing of the pit stops by McLaren would eventually be Norris’ undoing as he was left out a lap longer than Hamilton. The advantage turned to Hamilton’s favour, giving the seven-time world champion the race lead with a gap of three seconds to Verstappen.

And when the chequered flag fell it became official: Lewis Hamilton was a race-winner once again. His win that day ended a 56-race winless streak – his last race win being in Saudi Arabia in 2021

Historic Stage

Silverstone has long been a special stage for Hamilton, and 2024 solidified his unparalleled legacy. Starting P2 for the 11th time at the venue, he tied the record for most front-row starts at the British Grand Prix. Whilst many drivers dream of winning their home race once, Lewis Hamilton is one of the few drivers who can claim they have won it more than once. Let alone nine times.

The victory evoked memories of Hamilton’s 2008 Silverstone triumph, which he won by over a minute in torrential rain—a testament to his mastery of the track over the decades.

Silverstone Home Crowd

In front of a crowd of British fans, Silverstone roared as Hamilton took back the top step of the podium. After the race, Hamilton thanked all the fans for their unflinching support across what had been a tumultuous few years for him and Mercedes.

Silverstone, 2024 British Grand Prix, Sunday – Finn Pomeroy

“I’m forever grateful to everyone in this team, everyone at Mercedes, all of our partners, and otherwise to all our incredible fans… I could see you lap by lap as I was coming around, and there’s just no greater feeling [than] to finish at the front here.”

Mercedes’ Legacy

The 2024 British Grand Prix was the perfect way to commemorate Hamilton’s enduring partnership with Mercedes. Despite the challenges the team has faced since the upset in 2021, it was a perfect way for Lewis and Mercedes to say thank you to one another. Hamilton’s win this year was the perfect last hurrah before he leaves for Ferrari in 2025.

“This is my last race here at the British Grand Prix with this team [before moving to Ferrari], so I wanted to win this so much for them, because I love them, I appreciate them so much, all the hard work they’ve been putting in all over these years.
