Lando Norris etched his name in history during the Miami Grand prix. Securing not only his F1 Grand Prix victory, but also marked a turning point in their campaign for the Constructors’ Championship—a title they would ultimately secure.

It was a landmark day for the 24-year-old. Nevertheless, this win was more than just crossing the line in first place.

A win 5 years in the making.

The British driver made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 with the McLaren team. After being a valued member of the junior academy, he was promoted to replace the departing Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne.

Despite several rumours about his contract throughout his time with the McLaren team, Norris stayed loyal to his Papaya family. Emphasising several times that all good things take time, and McLaren simply needed time to be returned to their former glory days.

Staying loyal paid off when Lando Norris managed to beat both the Ferraris and Red Bulls on merit, not relying on a penalty or “luck”. The win in Miami was extra sweet for the driver and the team who have been on this journey together for the past 5 years.

Fighting back tears as the team celebrated wildly in the pit lane, the young driver stated, “About time! What a race. It’s been a long time coming. Finally, I’ve managed to do it.”

Overcoming Setbacks

Prior to the Miami win, the last win for the team was from Daniel Ricciardo’s triumph at Monza in 2021 their first win in 12 years. Lando had the opportunity to secure back-to-back victories for the British Team during the last Russian Grand Prix. However, a change in weather and lack of driver experience ended in disaster for them.

Alongside this, near-misses in Singapore and Qatar in the season prior had left Norris frustrated but undeterred. In Singapore, the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz was simply too strong, while in Qatar, a qualifying mistake forced Norris to start 10th, though he battled back to finish third. These setbacks only fuelled his determination, making the first victory that much sweeter.

“And, of course, I’ve had my moments where we’ve been close, and I’ve never been able to convert it into the win. But I wasn’t worried. I’ve been more confident than ever this year that I’ve got what it takes, and the team have got what it takes. I knew my time was coming.”

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

This win marked a new era for the McLaren team, with all the hard work behind the scenes paying off. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown both emphasised the collaborative effort behind Norris’ win. “We knew as soon as we made winning material available to Lando, he would deliver,” said Stella. Emphasising that this win whilst vital to Norris, meant so much to the McLaren team back in Woking as well.

Brown echoed the sentiment, describing the victory as a long-overdue milestone. “Building up these Formula 1 teams to be successful doesn’t happen overnight. It’s all been teamwork, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Little did the team know they would accomplish much more than a single race win in season 2024.

A New Chapter for McLaren

The 2024 season for McLaren was one of resurgance. Whilst Norris fell short in the Drivers’ Championship. The consistency from himself and Piastri throughout the season was instrumental in McLaren clinching the Constructors’ title. A trophy that hadn’t been won by the British team since 1998.

As Norris himself said, “This is only the beginning.” McLaren have a settled driver and team line up, helping them to build on the success of the 2024 season in the coming years. it will be exciting to see their progress in the coming seasons, where hopefully more trophies can return to the MTC in Woking.

The 2024 Miami Grand Prix will be remembered to many as the moment that McLaren and Norris turned potential into performance. Finally, igniting hopes for even greater achievements in the several seasons to come.
