Williams investigates why own scan deemed their floor legal

The Williams car of Alex Albon faced disqualification in the qualifying session at Zandvoort due to the floor being too wide and therefore illegal to race with.

Williams F1 team will be looking into why their pre-event scan of the car deemed the car to be legal and comply with Formula One regulations.

Alex Albon’s Disqualification

Alex Albon secured P8 prior to his a disqualification. But now the driver will have to start at the back of the grid along with fellow teammate Logan Sargent.

It is said that an area of the floor rumoured to be in front of the rear tires was too wide, and didn’t comply to the volume rules.

Williams had checked the measurements of it’s newly upgraded car several times. When the FIA came to a conclusion Williams were confused with the outcome.

No matter what Williams claims to be legal, it will always go by the governing body’s calibrated scanner’s findings.

James Vowles speaks on the matter

James Vowles Williams team principal seemed shocked by the news of the car and stated:

“We’ve obviously been following and complying to all of these procedures since they were brought into place several years ago, and haven’t been found in excess until now.

“We use scanning techniques now rather than physical measuring techniques, because it’s not just one point that you have to be aware of – its heights and widths all across some quite complex shapes.

“Before we came here, we have scanned the floor and the car multiple times. It happened back at the factory in isolation with the floor, it happened back at the factory on the car. It happened here on Thursday as well.

“We did demonstrate all of these results to the FIA, which indicate that our floor is within the legal compliance. But what matters is the adjudication of the FIA, their measurements and their systems, and that we entirely accept.”

Taking responsibility

The team has said that: “There’s no one really accountable for that but ourselves. That’s on our shoulders. No one else outside of that has any responsibility. We need to address and get on top of that with immediate effect.”

Despite this setback with a disappointing weekend for the Williams Team they seem to be quietly confident in the potential of the car. And with Alex securing a P8 prior to the disqualification it shows that. they are heading in the right direction.

Williams will be hoping to gain positions in the race and maybe have a safety car to help as well. The car is looking quick but a series of unlucky events has stopped the success the Williams team was hoping to achieve this weekend.

“We have nine more races where we have to deliver time and time again with perfection in order to score points and fight our way up the championship.” continued Vowels.

The team was able to make changes to the car so that it complied with the regulations. This means Alex Albon will drive the Williams in today’s race despite disqualification due to the floor yesterday.
