Reports from the Italian publication Autosprint suggest that Andrea Kimi Antonelli might have already signed a deal to drive for Mercedes in the 2025 F1 season.

If true, the announcement is expected to come during the week leading up to the Italian Grand Prix at the end of August.
Following the surprising news of Lewis Hamilton’s planned move to Ferrari in 2025, speculation about his replacement at Mercedes has been rampant.
While names like Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz have risen as potential candidates, it seems unlikely that Verstappen would leave Red Bull, and Sainz has already committed to Williams.
A Calculated Risk for Mercedes
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently commented to Autosport Wereld about the possibility of bringing Antonelli into the team.
Wolff expressed confidence in the decision, describing it as a “calculated risk.” He compared Antonelli’s potential progression to that of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
“If you look at the progress of [Oscar] Piastri, it took him a year and a half to compete for victory at the level of teammate Lando Norris. We want to try to do the same with Kimi.”
With the 2026 regulation changes on the horizon, Wolff also mentioned that 2025 would be a year of transition for Mercedes. This makes it an ideal time to integrate a young driver like Antonelli into the team. “So it’s a good season to form him into our team,” Wolff added.
Antonelli’s Rapid Climb
Antonelli’s meteoric rise through the racing ranks has been nothing short of impressive. Skipping Formula 3 entirely, he has already made a name for himself in Formula 2 this season. His recent victories at Silverstone and Hungary have undoubtedly boosted his confidence as he continues to develop as a driver.
However, when asked after his Hungary win if he felt ready to take the leap into F1 with Mercedes in 2025, Antonelli remained level-headed, emphasizing that his focus is firmly on his current Formula 2 campaign.
Hamilton’s Endorsement
Antonelli, who will turn 18 during the Dutch Grand Prix, is set to follow in the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton. The British also started his F1 career with a top team when he debuted with McLaren at 22 years old.
Hamilton himself has voiced support for the young driver. At this year’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix he stated that “If it was my job, my role, I’d probably take on Kimi.”
Only time will tell whether Antonelli can meet the high expectations that come with a seat at Mercedes.
