Adrian Newey has been the talk of the paddock since he announced his resignation at Red Bull.
Many thought he would move to Ferrari, while Aston Martin and Williams also entered the discussions. Some wondered if he would return to McLaren to close his career in F1 off. However, insiders now believe that Aston Martin is the favourite to sign Newey.
No to Ferrari?
This news is likely not what Ferrari hoped for. After signing seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who is aiming for his eighth title, and losing Technical Director Enrico Cardile, Ferrari has an opening to fill. With Aston Martin likely to gain Newey, this spot will not be filled by the top talent they wanted.
Moving to Italy is understood to be out of the question for Newey who was also unconvinced by Team Principal Fred Vasseur’s offer. Reports have suggested that Mike Elliot is now one of Ferrari’s main targets. An unsuccessful period at the Technical Director of Mercedes led to his departure from the German team last year after a decade of service.
Headed to Silverstone?
Aston Martin have targeted Newey for some time. In recent months, he reportedly received a private tour of the Silerstone-based team’s factory. CEO and Team Principal Lawrence Stroll has also had an active involvement in negotiations.
Since Summer 2023, but particularly in 2024 thus far, Aston Martin have struggled for performance. They have fallen down the field, which was evident in Imola after failed upgrades to the AMR24. It seems that the team are desperate to improve their situation and prepare for the 2026 regulation change, where they hope to use this in their favour.
Signing Adrian Newey could work alongside this goal. He is regarded as the greatest engineer in F1 history after all. Despite this, nothing has been confirmed at this stage. Rumours are just rumours and it remains unclear when an announcement will be officially made.
