The infamous Spa weather rears it’s head again, limiting running for the majority of the F1 FP3 session for the 2024 Belgian GP but not before Lance Stroll loses control of his Aston and hits the barrier.
The Start of the Session
The fastest lap of the early running was set by Max Verstappen with a 2:01.565. That is close to 20 seconds slower than the fastest time in FP2 set by Lando Norris who topped the timesheets with a 1.42:260.
The weather claimed the first victim of the session only 12 minutes in when Lance Stroll was caught out by the amount of water through Raidillon, spinning his Aston Martin to the left of the track and damaging his front left suspension.
Stroll’s accident sent out the red flag and shut down any running as the teams waited for the weather to clear, with several cars taking to the gravel prior to the Aston hitting the barrier, there was no real point in sending any cars out especially with Qualifying due in a few hours.
FP3 gets (mostly) rained off
Just prior to the session restarting after Lance Stroll’s accident the rain was a bit heavier meaning that the red flag was flown again as the track was just too wet to allow cars to run.
In one of the biggest surprises to the F1 FP3 session at the 2024 Belgian GP, the session was restarted with 2 minutes remaining, allowing the cars to go out for an out lap and an in lap, not the greatest spectacle for the fans but an opportunity for the teams to get some data on the wet tyres. Carlos Sainz was first out and almost straight away sends the car off the track, he keeps the car away from the barrier and carried on.
The lack of running in the session will lead to an interesting qualifying session later today.
