McLaren show more of their true speed, taking 1-2 with Max and the Ferrari pair close behind at the F1 FP2 session for the 2024 Belgian GP

FP2 for the Belgium GP started with some off track news, as Alpine conformed that team principal, Bruno Famin will leave the team at the end of August. Another person goes through the Alpine management meat grinder.

On track Action – Early Running
The first 15 minutes of the session continued as the last session ended with a Redbull in first and McLaren in second, however the main difference is that Norris was the McLaren instead of Oscar Piastri.
Russell and Hamilton had a decent first half, keeping themselves in the fifth and sixth for Russell and Hamilton respectively.
Under pressure, Perez was sitting in and around the top 10 in eighth, with Max having to serve a 10 place penalty for a ICE change and the pace of the McLaren’s it will be on Perez to get himself further up the grid and avoid silly mistakes.
Ocon finally takes to the track and the Ferrari’s turn up
Esteban Ocon finally took to the track in this session after a water leak cut his running in FP1. The Frenchman would put the Alpine in eighteenth as the session hit the half way point.
FP1 was not a notable session for the Ferrari’s, they didn’t do anything wrong, just quietly got on with their job. FP2 was slightly different with both cars enjoying an appearance near the top of the timesheets.
Kevin Magnussen had a good session putting the HAAS into eighth ahead of Perez in the Redbull.
The final Countdown
As the session headed into the final few minutes the McLaren’s finally put in a lap time that is more representative of their true pace. Lando posting a 1:42.260 with Oscar Piastri only 0.215 behind followed by Verstappen who was 0.217 behind the lead McLaren.

As the F1 FP2 session at the 2024 Belgian GP drew to a close the top three remained the same with Norris, Piastri and Verstappen. behind them it was the Ferrari pair of Leclerc and Sainz.
Daniel Ricciardo was having a decent session until something seemed to go wrong with the car, the Aussie aborted his final few minutes of the session to bring the the RB in and get the issue sorted for tomorrow.
