Currently in his second season with Alpine, Gasly finished 11th in the drivers’ championship in 2023, outperforming Ocon by a narrow margin of four points. The 2024 season started with challenges for Alpine, mainly due to their car being approximately 10 kg overweight. However, consistent efforts to reduce the weight and improve performance have led to more promising results.

A turnaround season

In recent races, Alpine has shown notable improvement. They secured double-points finishes in both Montreal and Spain, with Gasly finishing ninth in both races and Ocon taking 10th place. This puts Gasly ahead of his teammate in the current standings, leading five points to three.

Gasly expressed his contentment with the team and his optimism for the future.

“I feel very much at home at this great team. I enjoy being a real part of both the Formula 1 project and the wider Alpine Cars vision,”

He emphasised his commitment to the team’s long-term project, despite the season’s challenges.

Looking Ahead

Although there were rumours of Gasly moving to other teams, notably Sauber as they prepare for their transition to Audi in 2026, he decided to remain with Alpine. The decision was likely influenced by the departure of Ocon, with whom Gasly had several on-track clashes, notably in Monaco, where an incident between them led to Ocon’s retirement from the race.

“The extension of Pierre’s contract with the team is very pleasing. He is a driver with huge experience in Formula 1 and continues to show huge amounts of potential on-track. For Alpine as a brand, he is a great ambassador, and we therefore look forward to continuing our collaboration,”

Team principal Bruno Famin expresses his delight at Gasly’s contract extension.

Future Partnerships

The departure of Ocon leaves a vacant seat at Alpine, and speculation about who will partner Gasly is rife. Carlos Sainz has been mentioned as a potential candidate, alongside reserve driver Jack Doohan and Alpine WEC driver Mick Schumacher. Both Doohan and Schumacher have recently tested with Alpine’s 2022 car at Paul Ricard, indicating their serious consideration for the seat.

Famin highlighted the team’s focus on improving their current performance while considering future driver line-ups.

“While this is important for our future, we do have to keep our eyes close to what is coming, and that is focusing on improving our current package. We have high ambitions this current season, and we will work tirelessly to achieve those things”.
