Russell ‘confident’ Mercedes will win after Spanish GP podium

George Russell has said he is “confident” that Mercedes will win in 2024 after the success of their recent upgrades.

The team have now secured two podiums in consecutive weekends. Russell took third in Canada and Hamilton secured his first podium of the season in Spain.

It sets the team up nicely as we approach the mid-way point of the season. So, Russell’s win prediction is more of an achievable goal than it was a few weeks ago.

“We’re all feeling excited for the remainder of the season.” he said after the Spanish GP.

“I’m confident that we’ll win racing this year now and going into next year, who knows what what can happen.”

We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.”

It was a frustrating race for Russell personally as he had a chance at another podium before the final stops.

Mercedes opted to put the hards onto Russell’s car and the softs on Hamilton’s.

A decision he later regretted.

“I think there’s a few small things went against us today.” said Russell.

“We have a slow pit stop, that put us on the back foot in the middle stint and under a bit of pressure and then, we lost a lot of time fighting with Lando,”

“Switching onto the hard tyre was pretty rubbish, but it protected the P3 and P4 as a team,”

Mercedes still find themselves some way behind the top three in the Constructors Championship.

They currently sit on 151 points – McLaren are in third with 237 – meaning a strong second half of the season is needed.

It will also be welcome to team principal, Toto Wolff, who has looked like a man with the world on his shoulders recently.

It also shows the drivers on the market – Lewis Hamilton is off to Ferrari in 2025 – that Mercedes are still fighting at the front.

They will hope for to continue their good form in Austria next week.

The track is similar to Canada in its reliance on top line speed. Both Russell and Hamilton will want to continue the podium streak in Spielberg.
