After starting the 2024 Formula 1 season with plenty to improve, it appears that Mercedes’ work in upgrading the W15 is beginning to pay off. The German team locked out the second row during Qualifying for the Spanish GP.

Speaking to the media after the session, George Russell shared that thus far this weekend, “The car has been feeling great.” This follows his Pole Position and P3 finish at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Despite the second row lockout, Russell shared dissatisfaction with their result. “I think we believed [we could challenge for pole]”, he said.

“It’s Nice to be Back in the Mix”

After Hamilton’s domination in FP2 and a solid FP3 session, the team expected a closer gap to the Pole position if they did not achieve this themselves: “I think the gap to Lando and Max was probably a little bit bigger than we expected.”

Russell shared that he does not believe he nor Lewis “put the perfect lap together. We did good laps, but on a challenging track like this, you have to put the tyres in the right window and just find those last couple of tenths, and that is what Lando managed to do today, and we didn’t.”

Lando Norris will start the Spanish GP from Pole Position alongside Max Verstappen in P2. For the Mercedes’, Russell believes that “P3 and P4 is a really great place to fight tomorrow. I think that on a circuit like this, the pace of the car will always win out.”

He believes in Mercedes and thinks that they “do have the pace to fight with Max and Lando for the victory” at the 2024 Spanish GP.
