Williams had a strong start to the Canada race weekend. Alex Albon secured a P10 start in qualifying while Logan Sargeant out-qualified Sergio Pérez to start P13 behind the two Ferraris. Despite this, both drivers’ race ended early with a DNF each.
For Albon, his potential future teammate Carlos Sainz made a mistake in front of him, taking himself out of the race. As there was no room for Albon to avoid him, he also had to retire. While this was not the result the team wanted, they can take the positives and look to Barcelona.
Albon’s Upset
In a press release from Williams’ post-race, Albon lamented, “A disappointing end to our race today. Points were definitely on the table and the car felt good on all compounds in the changing conditions.”
To secure much-needed points, Albon shared that the team “didn’t take any unnecessary risks” through a “race plan [that] was well-executed by the team.”
“It was a battle of survival, which was always going to be the case considering the weather, and we ended up getting caught in other people’s errors. That’s racing and I don’t think I could’ve done anything differently.”
Sargeant’s Pressure
The pressure is on for Logan Sargeant after a difficult rookie season and rumours swirling about his potential replacement.
It is understandable that the young American puts pressure on himself. Despite starting the weekend off well, he struggled with the wet track conditions and ultimately lost the rear before he could salvage it and continue.
He shared, “The track conditions were difficult, especially at the start of the race with the amount of standing water. There was quite a lot of aquaplaning going on, so I was trying to manage that.”
With this, he believes he “made too many mistakes today and two punishing ones. I lost the rear extremely quickly and couldn’t save it.”
It is hard to not feel for the young driver. Defeated, he revealed: “I’m disappointed with myself after feeling like I was driving great this weekend. We had good pace when we were able to put together clean laps. We’ll move on and look ahead.”
Can Williams bring it back in Barcelona? With their hard work in Canada’s Free Practice sessions and Qualifying, it does not seem that far fetched to believe so.
