McLaren is having a mixed weekend in Canada this year. The team dominated in FP1 with Norris in P1 and Oscar Piastri comfortably in P6. A disastrous FP2 saw Piastri P16 and Norris P20 with a lot to improve on.
Naturally, the team was uncertain about what qualifying would hold. They proved doubters to be incorrect with a P3 start for Norris behind George Russell on Pole and Max Verstappen in P2.
Norris ‘Super Happy’ with P3
Asked of his second-row start, he said “I’m super happy” and extended his congratulations to Russell and Mercedes who have “been quick all weekend.”
However, he did note that “When it’s so close, you always think, ‘Could I have like jumped in the car for that little bit more?’” But “Third is a good job by us, so I’m happy and excited for tomorrow.”
Referring back to their tumultuous weekend thus far, he reasoned it to the Montréal circuit and unpredictable weather, which is “why we love it here. It’s one of the best places to come to every year. I love it. It’s why we’re all smiling, we’re having a good time.”
A P3 start bodes well for overtaking, especially if Norris starts well. He joked, “Two overtakes tomorrow! Easy, light work! No, I’m excited to see what we can do.” With McLaren’s package, it could be a lot. The British driver won his first Grand Prix in Miami and is looking to secure his second.
Norris predicts a good race on Sunday as the grid is closer this weekend. For McLaren, “The car has been great all season, especially the last three or four races we’ve been on a good roll, but two very fast drivers ahead, plenty of fast drivers behind, so we’ll put on a good show tomorrow.”
Do they have what it takes to take another win?
