Regardless of the fact Lando Norris won the Miami Grand Prix, Norris says Mclaren ‘need more’ to consistently challenge Red Bull and Ferrari.

The Woking team bought a slew of upgrades to the Miami GP two weeks ago. While Red Bull couldn’t nail the set-up of their car, and a safety car just at the right moment helped Norris to jump to the lead – he was often the quickest driver on track.
His teammate Oscar Piastri also showed flashes of speed in the half upgraded MCL38. He was running second to Verstappen in the first stint, before an incident with Carlos Sainz later in the race forced him to pit.
Norris Cautious
Norris has always aired on the side of pessimism throughout his career. This continues ahead of this weekends Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. He feels that McLaren still have work to do to challenge Red Bull and Ferrari, despite having the quickest car on race day in Miami.
“It was an amazing weekend, probably one I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
“I made the most of it, that’s how races go sometimes.”
“I was the quickest on the track, and I think that was the first good sign we had – and then it turned into something more.“
With the upgrades in full effect Norris mentioned…
“We were showing that the car made some good steps forward.”
However, despite McLaren’s performance in Miami he noted…
“We need more if we want to challenge Ferrari more consistently and if we want to challenge Red Bull more consistently.“
While recognising that the team had done a ‘great job’, Norris remained hopeful saying…
“We have more things hopefully coming in the future, and that’s what we need, to be there more often.”
When asked where McLaren are in the pecking order right now, Norris bluntly responded: “We’re third.”
In response to McLaren’s package – which Piastri will have the full version of this weekend – Ferrari are bringing their first major update of the season. This package will feature eight different changes as F1’s development race heats up as the European season begins.
