Ferrari’s Imola Upgrades: As the Formula 1 season heads into Europe, Ferrari has unveiled a slew of upgrades to their car, aimed at enhancing performance just in time for their first home race of the season at the iconic Imola circuit.
The key changes – what do they mean for the Italian team?

From Underbite to Overbite
One of the most visible changes to the Ferrari SF-24 will be the new sidepod inlet design. Which is switching from an underbite to an overbite configuration. This adjustment not only alters the aerodynamics around the car’s flanks but also optimises airflow management significantly. The new design, reminiscent of strategies employed by Red Bull and others, introduces a P-shaped inlet that aims to improve the car’s ability to breathe and cool effectively.
Cooling and Flow
Ferrari has revamped the car’s cooling system with a redesigned engine cover and larger cooling outlets, similar to those tested in Japan. This upgrade is crucial for maintaining engine performance and reliability throughout the race. The overbite design also removes any inlet interference on the upper surface of the sidepod, which likely improves airflow over the chassis, delivering a smoother, more efficient aerodynamic performance.
Floor and Aero Tweaks
Not all changes are as visible as the sidepods. Ferrari has also tweaked the floor of the SF-24, incorporating a more aggressive underfloor, to enhance the aerodynamics at the car’s base. These modifications suggest a focused effort on managing airflow to reduce drag and improve downforce. These could be critical factors in the fast corners and braking zones of Imola.
Rear Wing Reconfiguration
The rear of the Ferrari hasn’t been left untouched. Mods to the rear wing include changes to both the tip and endplate sections. These adjustments aim to expand the wing’s span and refine the tip vortex, ultimately improving the wing’s aerodynamic efficiency. This ‘should’ translate into better stability and speed on the straights but also during high-speed cornering.
What This Means for Ferrari…
These fairly extensive changes by Ferrari demonstrate a clear intent to optimize the SF-24’s performance and bring it ever closer to the dominant Red Bull. By focusing on both major aerodynamic elements and detailed tweaks, Ferrari is not just chasing incremental improvements but potentially game-changing performance gains.
As the team gears up for the challenges at Imola, these upgrades could be just what Ferrari needs to outpace rivals; such as McLaren and Red Bull. Can they reclaim the top spot on the podium?
